In people's minds, dinosaurs only lived in hot and humid environments, and they should be very afraid of cold. After decades of excavations, paleontologists have found a large number of dinosaur fossils in the cold Alaska, proving that dinosaurs also lived in the cold Arctic Circle, and these dinosaurs even included tyrannosaurs, which is the white bear dragon.

Located at the northwestern tip of North America, Alaska is the largest state in the United States by land area and the least populous state. Alaska's most common sights are the lofty mountains and large coniferous forests that are home to many wildlife. There is a Kikak-Tegoseak Quarry in northern Alaska, where fossils of paleontology can often be found.

In 2006, paleontologists found a fossil of a dinosaur during excavations at the Cocaco-Tigusco quarry, and the rock wrapped in the fossil was immediately transported to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Callas, Texas. In the museum, restoration technicians cleared the rock, and then the staff scanned the fossils with computed tomography, which showed that the fossils belonged to some unknown class of tyrannosaurs. After 8 studies, paleontologists named the dinosaur Nanuqsaurus in 2014.

Also known as Polar BearOsaurus or Arctic Tyrannosaurus rex, the genus name comes from the Inupik word "Nanuq" (meaning "polar bear") and the Greek word "saurus" (meaning "lizard"), meaning "polar bear lizard". The model breed name of the white bear dragon is Nanuqsaurus hoglundi, and the species name "hoglundi" is dedicated to Forrest Hoglund in recognition of his achievements in earth sciences and his efforts in cultural philanthropy.

Mini Tyrannosaurus rex of the north

As a member of the Tyrannosaurus rex family, the White Bear Dragon resembled the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex in appearance, but was much smaller in body. The white bear dragon is only 5 meters long, 1.5 meters high at the hips, and weighs about 500 kilograms.

Like Tyrannosaurus rex , it had a large head , a short , stubby neck , a strong body , short forelimbs , and strong hindlimbs. The head of the white bear dragon is 0.64 meters long, although it is only one-third of the head of the Tyrannosaurus rex, but its huge mouth has a strong bite force, and a pair of large eyes on the head have good vision. Considering that the white bear dragon lived in the cold Arctic Circle, paleontologists speculated that the white bear dragon probably had warm feathers on its body, but this hypothesis was not supported by fossils.

The White Bear Dragon lived in Alaska, between 71 and 68 million years ago, when Alaska was located in the Arctic Circle as it is today. The formation where the fossils of The White Bear Dragon were found was the Prince Creek Formation, which also found Chilong, Lizardosaurus, Wounded Toothosaurus belonging to the Toothed Dragon class, Archaic Plant-eating Dragon belonging to the Duck-billed Dragon class, Alaskan-headed Dragon belonging to the Swollen-headed Dragon, and Thick-nosed Dragon belonging to the Horned Dragon class.

The Princes Formation formation not only contains fossils of various dinosaurs, but also a large number of plant fossils, which reproduce a different Cretaceous Alaska. Alaska during the Cretaceous period had a temperate monsoon climate that was much warmer than it is today, but when winter came, it would still enter the polar night when there was no sun for several months, accompanied by snowfall. Compared to the lower latitudes, the Cretaceous environment of Alaska was still harsh for dinosaurs, but there were still many species of dinosaurs that survived here, and the white bear dragon was one of the top predators.

The white bear dragon living in the Arctic Circle is the northernmost known tyrannosaur superfamily dinosaur, and when winter comes, they are accompanied by brilliant auroras to guard this territory located at the northernmost point of the earth!
