It is one of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) designated resource insects.

The adult form is similar to that of bees, non-toxic and harmless, does not like to be close to humans, is a large diptera, adult body length 13-22 mm. It is a saprophytic water fly insect that can feed on animal feces and household waste to produce high-value animal protein feed. In nature, the larvae feed on animal manure, decaying organic matter such as carrion, rotten fruits, vegetables and plant waste, which can be used for the harmless treatment of kitchen waste and livestock and poultry manure.

Native to the Americas, it is widely distributed in southern China, such as Hunan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan and other regions. It usually inhabits green bushes and has no habit of entering human rooms. The larvae of the black water fly have similar habits to flies, and the adult insects during the breeding period are mostly found in the natural environment and in the neglected environmental areas of urban and rural areas. In Nanning, the first document with the government's reputation as the main body was issued to fully support the domestic black water fly breeding industry chain.

Black water fly larvae

Compared with the cultivation of other insects or poultry, black water fly farming has the following major advantages:

Reproduction is rapid

High biomass

Wide range of diets

High absorption conversion rate

Easy to manage

Low feeding costs

Environmentally friendly insects. Compared with cattle, the cultivation of black water fly occupies very little water and land resources, and only produces a small amount of greenhouse gases.

Speaking of black water fly, it has to be said that they have made brilliant achievements in the field of environmental protection, black water fly mainly feeds on kitchen waste and livestock and poultry manure, black water fly treatment of kitchen waste everyone should have heard about it for a long time, today mainly talk about the black water fly treatment of livestock and poultry manure.

With the development of China's aquaculture industry, livestock and poultry manure pollution has become a serious environmental problem, black water fly as an important resource insect, in the transformation of livestock and poultry manure, the effect is very ideal, and can effectively remove the odor in the feces. The nitrogen of pig manure treated with black water fly was reduced by 55.1%, phosphorus was reduced by 44.1%, potassium was reduced by 52.8%, calcium was reduced by 56.2%, magnesium was reduced by 41.2%, sulfur was reduced by 44.7%, copper was reduced by 45.8%. Through the feeding of black water fly larvae, it not only effectively solves the accumulation of livestock and poultry manure, greatly reduces the pollution of manure to the environment, but also increases the income of farmers and brings good economic and social benefits. In addition, the fecal residues eaten by the larvae of black water fly contain a large amount of humic acid, which is a high-quality solid organic fertilizer and a good material for raising earthworms and red worms.

It can enhance the immune function of body fluids and cells, improve disease resistance and reduce the risk of breeding.

It can strengthen the synthesis and utilization of proteins in the body, improve the production performance of livestock and poultry, and improve the quality of meat and eggs.

It can change the physiology of bacteria, interfere with the metabolism of bacteria, and prevent the infection of pathogens to the body.

Promotes digestion and absorption of nutrients.

It can delay or block the oxidation process of feed, stabilize feed quality, improve feed hygiene, and improve feed palatability.

Rich in chitin (chrysin), it helps to eliminate waste in the body and ensures the normal operation of livestock and poultry physiological functions.

Rich in antibacterial peptides: has a unique immune function, has a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect, kills invasive bacteria.

Rich in beneficial bacteria: it can greatly improve the feed conversion rate and reduce the cost of breeding.

Improve gastrointestinal function, treatment of livestock and poultry strain.

It can improve the egg laying rate of poultry and prolong the egg laying cycle. Improve the fertility rate, litter rate and litter survival rate of sows.

SUSINCHAIN is a research project funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme, launched on 1 October 2019. The project aims to contribute to the supply of new proteins in the Field of Feed and Food in Europe. SUSINCHAIN hopes to enhance the economic value of insects and promote the development of insect industry through multi-party participation and comprehensive cooperation.

With a global population expected to reach 9.1 billion by 2050, significant changes in the global diet would require a 60% increase in the worldwide food supply. The protein supplied to food and animal feed is critical, which also requires a transformation of the source of protein. Through efficient processing methods, edible insects that are marginalized during food production can be converted into high-quality proteins, amino acids and vitamins. Therefore, from the perspective of circular economy and sustainable development, insects are a missing link in the food system. Insects and insect products entered the EU market as early as 2010, when insects were recognized as valuable protein resources for food and animal feed. However, the insect value chain has been slower to improve and improve in Europe.

Stakeholders in the insect value chain in the SUSINCHAIN project proposed strategies and arranged activities to address the challenges of development. The SUSINCHAIN project is designed to test, test and display the latest technologies, products and related scientific research results. Strive to raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of Black Soldier Fly (BSF), Housefly (HF), Mealworm (MW), and Crickets (HC) for food or feed.

The Technical Readiness level represents 9 levels from initial theory to final application. Level 6 represents a demonstration of the results of the technology. The application of the 6th level to the end involves the development, formation and improvement of the industrial chain and subsystem.

These activities provide the necessary knowledge and data for the insect value chain to help reduce the price of insect products, improve the efficiency of insect handling, and make insect feed and insect food in the market safer and longer-lasting. This will promote the upgrading and commercialization of the insect industry in Europe and other regions in the future. By 2025, 10% of animal feed protein will come from insects, and the industrial capacity and jobs will also increase significantly.

SUSINCHAIN has a project budget of 8.5 million euros and a 48-month cycle in which 18 industrial companies and 17 research institutes participate. Dr. Teun Veldkamp of the Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) and Professor Ine van der Fels-Klerx co-manage the project as coordinators.
