The family letter of martyr Yang Da

Yang Da, born in 1902, formerly known as Yang Xianda, was a native of Peng County (now Pengzhou City), Sichuan Province. In March 1923, Yang Da, who was determined to study medicine to relieve the villagers, was admitted to the medical preparatory class of West China Union University, and during his time at the school, Yang Da further accepted new culture and new ideas. In 1924, Yang Da resolutely broke through the family's obstacles, bid farewell to his new wife, went to Shanghai to study, and was admitted to the Medical Dewen Class of Tongji University in Shanghai. Influenced by progressive ideas, he deeply felt that even if he learned medicine, he could only save people, not society and the country. In 1925, with the enthusiasm of saving the country and the people, he transferred to the Department of Social Sciences of Shanghai University. Under the guidance of Deng Zhongxia, Qu Qiubai, Yun Daiying and other Communists, he assiduously studied Marxism-Leninism, actively participated in the struggle against aggression and oppression, and soon joined the Communist Party of China. In May 1925, he actively participated in the "May Thirtieth" anti-imperialist patriotic movement. On June 26, 1925, Yang Da, Yang Hansheng, Li Shuoxun, and Yu Zehong (all Sichuan students from Shanghai University) attended the Seventh Congress of the All-China Federation of Students and threw themselves into the torrent of anti-imperialist patriotism.

It is understood that after Yang Da threw himself into the revolution and went to Shanghai, his family was worried about his safety and wrote many letters urging Yang Da to return home. In 1925, Yang Da wrote a family letter to his wife's brother-in-law Chen Luru, which has been preserved to this day, and although this 14-page family letter is old and the creases are blurred, it is still shocking and proud to read today. He aspired to be "the light that tore through the darkness." "It can be seen that the noble personality and progressive spiritual thought of martyr Yang Da are a powerful spiritual force that supports him to devote himself to transforming society and dedicating himself to the revolution, which is worthy of our study and inheritance.

In 1926, Yang Da rushed to Guangzhou to join the National Revolutionary Army and served as Comrade Zhu De's chief of staff; on April 2, 1927, under the preparatory command of Yang Da, Fang Zhimin, Liu Jiufeng and other benevolent people, a demonstration against the AB Regiment was held, and the leader of the AB Regiment was arrested and the (rightist) provincial party headquarters was destroyed. On August 1, 1927, Yang Da participated in the Nanchang Uprising. After the Nanchang rebel army withdrew from Nanchang, in order to develop the revolutionary forces, Yang Da, regardless of his personal safety, remained in Nanchang and ran between Fengcheng and Nanchang, adhered to the party's revolutionary activities, and made contributions to the party. On February 1, 1928, in Nanchang City, under the shroud of the White Terror, Yang Da was unfortunately arrested, and in the face of the severe torture and threats and inducements of the Kuomintang reactionaries, he remained unyielding and unyielding, angrily tortured the enemy, so he was killed by the Kuomintang reactionaries on the outskirts of Nanchang, sacrificing his young and precious life for the revolutionary cause, at the age of 25.
