Somaliland, located in the northwest of the Federal Republic of Somalia, bordering Djibouti and the Gulf of Aden to the north, is one of the autonomous regions of the Federal Republic of Somalia, with a coastline of 740 kilometers, an area of 137,000 square kilometers, and a population of about 3.5 million (2020), which is extremely economically backward.

In January 1991, the Somaliciad regime was overthrown, and Somalia fell into civil war, with multiple regimes coexisting. In May, northern Somalia declared "independence" and established the so-called "Republic of Somaliland", with its capital in Hargeisa.

It has not been recognized by the international community since the declaration of independence in 1991. It is widely recognized by the international community as a local government in Somalia.
