　　Tikal is regarded as the cradle of the Maya civilization, reaching its peak during the Mayan Classic period (circa 200-850), and the area of the Petén jungle in present-day Guatemala became the earliest center of Maya civilization. Tikal National Park, including the Mayan ruins of Tikal, was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1979 as a dual cultural/natural heritage.
