On December 23, 1941, the Japanese army launched an attack on the upper reaches of the Xinqiang River in Changsha and threatened to spend New Year's Day 1942 in Changsha, and the Third Battle of Changsha began.
At that time, Xue Yue was the commander of the Kuomintang's 9th Theater (his father named him Xue Yangyue because of his admiration for Yue Fei, and later changed his name to Xue Yue).
This "Yue Fei" on the anti-Japanese battlefield led all the soldiers to fight with the enemy and vowed to fight to the end with the Japanese army, not giving an inch of land, and protecting Changsha to the death.
At this time, Chu Dinghou, who was already a platoon leader, was ordered to hold the north bank of the Liuyang River and prevent the Japanese army from attacking the south. In between holding his ground, he wrote this family letter.

Soon after this letter was issued, the Japanese army entered the line of the Liuyang River.
