The most brutal murder in Hong Kong: dismembering a doll and hiding a corpse, why was he only convicted of manslaughter?

author:The little lamb cub is starting a business

On a spring night in 1999, the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, were filled with the coolness of the night and the busy crowds. However, in a residential building, there was a horrific murder. What was once a well-located apartment has now become a bloody mansion.

Fan Minyi, a 23-year-old girl, is imprisoned here because of a dispute over money and debt.

She had struggled, but was desperate to find that she could not escape this terrifying place. Here, it's a hell.

Several men, constantly inflicting violence and abuse on her. Her body was frantically injured until she was eventually tortured to death.

But that wasn't the scariest, and when the police finally arrived at the scene, they found Fan's body dismembered and cooked. Her head was maliciously stuffed into the head of a mermaid-shaped Hello Kitty doll, as if it was the handiwork of some kind of perverted killer.

This horrific case shocked the whole of Hong Kong and became one of the worst crimes in society at that time. One cannot imagine such a cruel incident in a city full of life and vitality.

Fan Minyi's death has become an eternal talk in people's mouths. The case has also become one of the creepiest stories in Hong Kong history.

Ms. Fan lives in a dilapidated apartment in Hong Kong, her room is only a few square meters, and there is a crack in the wall that leaks whenever it rains.

She had never met her biological father, who abandoned her and her mother before she was born. Her mother didn't love her either, and when she was a little girl, she followed another man, leaving her and her grandmother to fend for.

Fan Minyi has not received a good education and care since she was a child, and after dropping out of junior high school, she began to wander the streets, she is irritable, inferior and sensitive, and often clashes and fights with people.

But in this cold and unforgiving world, the only person who makes her feel warm and safe is her grandmother. Although her grandmother was old and infirm, she never gave up on Fan Minyi and gave her the most selfless love.

The grandmother developed severe heart disease and high blood pressure in old age and needed regular medication and check-ups. The cost of medicine is a heavy burden for them.

In order to raise money to treat her grandmother, Fan Minyi, who has no diploma network support, can only choose to work as a escort in a nightclub to make money. Every night between ten o'clock and four o'clock in the morning, she had to endure various male guests flirting and harassing.

Sometimes in order to make more money or avoid trouble, she also has to go out with guests to open a house or accompany them to use drugs.

Fan Minyi knew that doing so would hurt her physically and mentally, but in order to make her grandmother live longer, more comfortable, and happier, she felt that no matter how hard and tired she was, it was worth it.

One night, Fan Minyi met Chen Wenle, a man in a luxury sports car and wearing a brand-name suit. He fell in love with Fan Minyi at first sight, constantly toasting her, sending flowers, and praising her beauty and temperament.

Fan Minyi was moved by his enthusiasm and generosity, and was very grateful in her heart. They exchanged phone numbers and made an appointment to meet the next day. Soon after, the two began a romantic relationship.

However, Fan Minyi's plight has not been alleviated. After getting along for a while, Chen Wenle gradually revealed his true face, it turned out that he was an addict addict to methamphetamine, and often had violent tendencies, and he turned his fists and feet at Fan Minyi.

Sometimes he forced her to smoke meth with him or use her as a bargaining chip for other drug dealers. I thought that I had found a rich boyfriend who could be trusted for life, thinking that my predicament could be alleviated, but I didn't want to fall into a bigger predicament, which made Fan Minyi, who was already difficult to support, even more desperate.

My grandmother's medical bills were increasing, and her salary could not cover them. In order to solve the problem, she secretly took thousands of Hong Kong dollars and other belongings from Chen Wenle, totaling 8,000 yuan. She wanted to borrow the money to ease her grandmother's plight and planned to return it to him later. But this theft was eventually discovered by Chen Wenle.

Chen Wenle was so angry that he felt that Fan Minyi had betrayed him and dared to steal his money and things. He called her, cursed, and threatened to make her look good if she didn't give him all her money and belongings back.

Fan Minyi trembled with fright, and she cried and begged him for forgiveness, saying that she just wanted to use the money to treat her grandmother, and she would return it to him as soon as possible. Chen Wenle didn't listen to her explanation, and sneered: "You think I'm a philanthropist? The money you owe me is subject to interest, a thousand dollars a day! If you don't pay me back, I'll let you die without a place to be buried!" After speaking, he hung up the phone.

Fan Minyi felt desperate, she didn't know how she ended up in such a situation. She worked desperately to make more money to pay off her debts. But business in nightclubs is getting worse and worse, and there are fewer and fewer customers. Sometimes you can only earn a few hundred yuan a night, which is not enough to pay the rent and grandmother's medical bills. In order to earn a little more money, she even began to accept various perverted requests from guests.

But none of this worked. Chen Wenle sent two of his men to collect debts from her. One is called Liang Shengzu and the other is called Liang Weilun. Both of them are triad elements who have been hanging out on the streets for many years, and their methods are ruthless.

They would come to the door every day to collect debts, and sometimes beat or sexually assault Fan Minyi. Fan Minyi no longer has any dignity and self-esteem, and can only swallow her anger and accept their abuse.

Fan Minyi, who originally only had 4,000 yuan left, had become 30,000 yuan under the interest calculated by Chen Wenle. This is simply astronomical for a lady who earns less than HK$10,000 a month. Fan Minyi felt that she had no way out.

Fan Minyi's life is getting harder and harder every day, and she has to endure all kinds of torture in nightclubs in order to pay off her debts, drinking with different guests every night, dancing, chatting, and even doing some things she is not willing to do.

She often meets rude, violent, perverted guests, and sometimes beats or rapes them. She felt like a soulless puppet at the mercy of others.

To make matters worse, she found out she was pregnant. She didn't know who the father of the child was or what to do. She thought about beating the baby, but she didn't have the money to go to the hospital or the courage to face the choice. She thought about having a baby, but she didn't have the ability to raise him (or her) and had no hope of giving him (or her) a good future. Therefore, she can only continue to struggle like this.

Finally, one day, Fan Minyi saved up enough 14,000 Hong Kong dollars and returned it to one of Chen Wenle's three, Liang Shengzu. This is the first installment repayment amount they agreed upon.

Fan Minyi thought that this would relieve some pressure, but Liang Shengzu told her: "Do you think you can pay back this money?" Do you know how much you owe us? Do you know how much interest we charge you every day? You still owe us HK$30,000 now! If you can't pay off all your money next month, that's not all!"

Fan Minyi was stunned when she heard this, she couldn't figure out how to pay more debts every time. It turned out that in order to make more profits, Chen Wenle and the three raised the interest without telling Fan Minyi, and added various fines and fees.

Fan Minyi felt unable to breathe, she felt that she was cornered. Since then, Chen Wenle and the three have intensified, starting to call her more frequently to collect debts, and often come to the door to find fault. Sometimes they would rob her of the money she had just earned; Sometimes they would wait outside the apartment for her to return; Sometimes they even broke into her room and beat or insulted her.

Fan Minyi can only avoid them as much as possible, changing jobs in nightclubs, changing rooms in apartments, and changing routes on the street. But none of that made her safe.

As a result, Fan Minyi began to live a life of horror and anxiety, living fearfully every day. Always have nightmares when you go to bed at night; Always have a headache and dizziness when you get up during the day; Always have no appetite when eating; Always lack of energy at work; Always directionless when walking...

In this chaotic world, Fan Minyi has to consider the safety of herself and her children, and she tries hard to get out of this dead end, but she hits a wall again and again. Finally, feeling completely hopeless, she chose to flee the city and seek safety.

However, her creditors did not give up, and they tracked her whereabouts and eventually caught her on a silent night.

One dark night in 1999, Leung Shengzu and Leung Wai Lun came to Fu Yiu House, Lai Yao Estate, Kwai Chung. On Chen Wenle's orders, they were to escort Fan Minyi from her residence.

When they arrived at Fan Minyi's doorstep, she already had a premonition that something bad was about to happen. However, she could not resist the power of the two tall men and could only be ruthlessly controlled by them.

During the long drive, Fan Minyi tried to find a glimmer of life, but she could not find any chance of escape. Eventually, she was taken to a room on the 3rd floor, 31 Galenway Old Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, and became a prisoner.

Chen Wenle, Liang Shengzu, and Liang Weilun imprisoned Fan Minyi in the room of the apartment. When Chen Wenle saw Fan Minyi, his face became extremely hideous, and he began to angrily scold her for why she didn't pay back and why she didn't answer the phone.

Subsequently, he began to kick Fan Minyi's body hard, each kick brought severe pain, and more than 50 kicks made Fan Minyi almost unconscious.

Liang Shengzu and Liang Weilun were calmly watching on the sidelines, seemingly unconcerned about all this.

After that, the three began to torture Fan Minyi even more cruelly. They sealed the glass windows in the room with wooden planks to isolate Fan Minyi from the outside world.

Later, they took out a bottle of cooking oil and forcibly poured it into Fan Minyi's mouth, almost suffocating her. They applied chili oil to Fan Minyi's wounds, making her feel unbearable pain.

Even more cruelly, the three began to force Fan Minyi to swallow feces and drink urine. They committed all kinds of bad things on her, and she had to endure extreme pain and humiliation.

At first, Fan Minyi cried and begged them for mercy, saying that she would find a way to pay off the debt as soon as possible, as long as they let her go.

She said she wouldn't call the police or tell anyone what had happened to her, as long as they showed kindness to let her go.

Chen Wenle and the three listened to her words, but there was no trace of sympathy or pity. They laughed and said, "Do you think we arrested you to ask for money?" We caught you to play with you! You don't want to get out alive! ”

"You pay back? You have the ability to pay it back a long time ago! You're just stalling for time now! Do you think we will believe you? ”

Chen Wenle tortured Fan Minyi for weeks, dripping melted plastic straws on her legs and ordering her to laugh.

When Fan Minyi was unconscious, they would occasionally irritate the burn scars on her wounds.

They tied Ms. Fan's hands together with wires for hours, then beat her hands with steel pipes.

Fan Minyi's body was ruthlessly destroyed by Chen Wenle and the three, and she felt that she was about to lose her support. Her nerves were numb and her senses were lost.

She no longer pleaded or protested to the three demons, but simply endured their abuse in silence.

Sometimes, she would faint from pain, but they wouldn't stop torturing her. She wanted to cry, but the tears dried up; She tried to call for help, but the voice also disappeared. She could only pray in her heart, hoping that someone would find her and redeem her.

After a few weeks, Fan Minyi finally couldn't bear it anymore and fell into a coma. Chen Wenle even burned her foot with a lighter to test whether she was dead.

Soon after, Fan Minyi was forcibly injected with a large amount of methamphetamine, and she rolled on the ground, in pain. Finally, in mid-April 1999, she was tortured to death.

Chen Wenle and the three found out that Fan Minyi was dead, which was expected, they did not panic in the slightest, calmly discussed how to dispose of the body, and finally, they decided to divide her body.

They moved the bodies to the bathtub to bleed, sawed open the bones, packed the deceased's internal organs in plastic bags, and cooked them in the bathroom. The partially mutilated body was placed in multiple plastic bags and then dumped in the dumpster.

Chen Wenle cooked the head of the deceased in a kerosene stove in his room. When Chen Wenle took out Fan Minyi's head from the pot, he pulled out the half-dissolved hair while saying, "Don't move, I'll help you dress up!" ”

He thought he was clever enough to stuff some cotton into Fan Minyi's skull, as if to shape her.

Next, he cut open a mermaid-shaped Hello Kitty doll, took out part of the cotton, stuffed the deceased's cooked skull into it, and sewed it up.

Afterwards, Chen Wenle also instructed Leung Weilun and Leung Shengzu to feed the meat to the dogs. The three then fled.

During the rape case in the neighboring unit, police officers arrived at the scene to investigate, and they hurriedly threw some of the internal organs out of the window and fell into the canopy of the building.

During the period of hiding the body, a male resident surnamed Huang who lived upstairs once saw a figure constantly lifting and falling on the hot gas tank of the building.

After the case, the unit was vacant, but the neighbors nearby repeatedly smelled the strong stench in the unit and called the police for help, but the police arrived at the scene and thought it was garbage odor and did not investigate it in depth.

During the Lunar New Year in 1999, Liang Shengzu invited his 13-year-old girlfriend Afang to live in the incident unit. During the crime, Ah Fang identified Chen Wenle as having shot Fan Minyi's mouth with urine, and asked Ah Fang to defecate on the shoebox, forcing Fan Minyi to eat it.

Ah Fang didn't want to, but Chen Wenle said viciously: "If you don't eat, I will kill you." Ah Fang was so frightened that she did not dare to resist anymore, so she had to follow Chen Wenle's orders.

Fan Minyi was forced to eat this perverted "dinner", so disgusted that she almost vomited. She once cried and said to Ah Fang, "I don't want to die, save me!" Ah Fang stood helplessly on the side, and could only silently mourn for herself and Fan Minyi.

In the following days, Ah Fang would see Fan Minyi being tortured by Chen Wenle every day, and every time she saw such a scene, she would cry silently, but she did not have the courage to tell anyone, she could only bear all this silently.

Until a month after the murder, the three who escaped did not know whether they had no time to deal with it, or ignored the existence of such a person, and no one contacted Ah Fang.

Ah Fong finally couldn't bear the guilt and torture in her heart, and confided in the social worker of Ma Tau Wai Girls' Home in Kowloon at the time, saying that she had the same nightmare in which a man whose head had been cut off asked her for his head.

The social worker reported this to the police on 24 May 1999, and Ah Fang told the police about the whole incident. She also became an important tainted witness in the case.

On 26 May 1999, it was a night full of mystery and fear, but a team of detectives from Yau Tsim District of Kowloon had to face it bravely.

Ah Fang is taken downstairs to the scene of the crime, her fear is growing, and the agents must ensure her safety. They packed masks and plastic bags to cover their feet and prepared to go to the crime scene. When they arrived at the scene, Ah Fang cowered and could only point out the unit downstairs.

The officers carefully opened the gate, and a strong rancid smell came to their noses, as if it was the breath of hell. The house was a mess, and there was blood all over the walls.

In the light, the agents saw a mermaid-shaped Hello Kitty doll leaning against the hallway wall.

After a slight stab of the iron branch, the doll's hidden head was revealed, and the agents felt the hard object. This is a terrifying scene, because the head in the doll is not fully cooked, and it is still oozing fishy blood.

After a careful search of the site, agents also found two stainless steel pots and a clay pot. These vessels, apparently once used to cook human heads, are surrounded by corpse insects and filled with foul-smelling dregs.

When the medical examiners arrived at the scene, they immediately began to collect evidence, and they first examined the inside of the doll.

The doll's cotton was crawling with bed bugs, and the skull hidden inside was cooked. The flesh and hair have been destroyed, and DNA testing is impossible. However, this is not a problem for the experienced dental forensic scientist Leung Jiaju.

He uses a method called the "photo overlay method". First, the photograph of the deceased was enlarged, and then the skull was compared with the photograph. Liang Jiaju calmly compared and finally succeeded in confirming the identity of the deceased.

Agents also found some key evidence at the scene, including an open, doorless refrigerator that chilled, a hammer stained with blood, and a clay pot suspected to have been used to cook corpses.

The most brutal murder in Hong Kong: dismembering a doll and hiding a corpse, why was he only convicted of manslaughter?

After discovering Fan Minyi's body, the police immediately launched a chase, hoping to bring the murderer to justice before the media exposed.

On 27 May 1999, they traced Chen Wenle's whereabouts based on clues. It turned out that Chan Man Lok had moved out of the crime scene with his wife Apai and newborn child and temporarily lived in a friend's flat on the 17th floor of Shek Ning House, Shek Ling Estate, Kwai Chung. The police sent four agents to surround the unit and successfully arrested Chen Wenle and Apai.

At the same time, other agents also searched multiple locations to try to find the traces of Leung Shengzu and Leung Weilun. They searched their homes and frequented places, but found no clues.

Liang Shengzu knew that he could not escape justice and voluntarily surrendered to the police.

Liang Weilun, on the other hand, fled to Guangxi in horror after seeing the news in the newspaper. Upon learning that he had left Hong Kong, the police requested Interpol, the Immigration Department and the Chinese mainland Public Security Bureau for assistance in his arrest.

It was not until February 14, 2000 (the tenth day of the first lunar month) that a public security police officer met Liang Weilun by chance on a street in Guangxi while performing another mission. Since he was unable to produce his identification documents, the police brought him back for questioning. After comparing fingerprints and photographs, the police confirmed that he was a suspect on the Hong Kong wanted warrant and extradited him back to Hong Kong for trial. (Case Number: CACC 522/2000)

The most brutal murder in Hong Kong: dismembering a doll and hiding a corpse, why was he only convicted of manslaughter?

The case was heard in the High Court on 9 October 2000 and a jury of seven men heard the prosecution and defence.

In his opening statement, the chief prosecutor used words such as "murderous" and "nuclear shock" to describe the method of the shredded corpse case, and he warned the jurors to be mentally prepared, not to be disturbed by the photos of the crime scene, the skull of the deceased and other evidence, and to judge the facts objectively and fairly.

He noted that all three defendants were charged with murder, unlawful confinement and preventing the legal burial of corpses, a total of three counts.

When the police investigated this case, they faced a difficult problem: how to prove that the deceased was Fan Minyi? Because her body has been dismembered, cooked, fed to dogs, only a skull remains. However, after receiving guilty confessions from the three defendants to charges of illegal handling of corpses, and after the tainted witness Afong provided the tragic testimony she had witnessed, the police concluded that there was sufficient evidence to charge the three for murder.

All three defendants pleaded guilty in court to confinement or preventing the legal burial of the body, but all denied murder. They dumped each other in self-defense and tried to shirk responsibility.

Both Leung Shengzu and Leung Wai Lun claimed that they were only following Chen Wenle's orders and did not actively participate in the abuse or killing of Fan Minyi.

Witnesses who later testified in court also revealed that Chen Wenle was a member of the underworld and Shenghe faction, and was the strongest of the three.

On the first day of trial, the deceased's boyfriend Wu Zhiyuan, his aunt, and the residents on the second floor and upstairs at the murder scene all appeared as witnesses to testify.

Wu Zhiyuan said he had not seen the deceased since 13 March 1999.

The aunt said that on the day of the crime, two men came to the door to look for the deceased and took her mobile phone and wallet.

The couple on the second floor downstairs and the residents upstairs also said they had heard the sound of women screaming in the unit, but they did not call the police or inquire.

During the interrogation, the police officers from time to time brought into the courtroom the most gruesome evidence of the case, a Hello Kitty doll containing the skull of the deceased, and displayed other items related to the shredded body, such as a refrigerator for storing the corpse and a clay pot for cooking the corpse.

The evidence emitted an unpleasant stench and an air of death permeated the courtroom.

After more than a month of trial, the case finally entered the final stage.

In his guidance to the jury, Judge Nguyen stressed that they should focus on determining whether the three defendants were guilty of assault, abuse and dismemberment of Pham Min-yee, rather than being influenced by the prosecution's witnesses' other charges against Chan Van Lok.

He said that whether Chan was a loan shark or a drug trafficker had nothing to do with the case, only evidence relating to the deceased was important.

The defence barristers tried to exonerate the murder of the three defendants.

They noted that the prosecution pardon witness Ah Fang did not witness Fan Minyi's circumstances before her death and did not know exactly how she died.

They believe that Fan Minyi may have died because she had taken an overdose of methamphetamine, and that the three defendants did not kill her.

They said that even if Fan Minyi was brutally treated by the three defendants during her lifetime, this does not indicate that they had a motive or conduct for murder.

The prosecution refuted the defense's claims, arguing that Ah Fong's evidence was credible and supported by other evidence.

They said the defense's allegation that Fan Minyi smoked meth on her own was only speculation and had no basis.

They said Fan's symptoms before her death, such as convulsions, fever and foaming at the mouth, were not necessarily caused by methamphetamine use, but may have been caused by her prolonged beatings and abuse, which caused her physical collapse.

They also noted that, according to Liang's own confession, he saw blood coming out of Fan's ears after discovering that she was dead. This indicates that she died as a result of a severe blow to the head.

After nearly two months of trial, the case finally came to the time for the jury to verdict.

In delivering his final guidance to the jury, Judge Nguyen gave them a dozens of pages of notes summarizing the key points and legal principles of the case.

He said the jury had to choose between two possible causes of death:

First, Fan Minyi was beaten to death by three defendants, which is claimed by the prosecution;

The second is that Fan Minyi died because she took an excessive dose of methamphetamine, which is what the defense claims.

He said juries should judge which claim is more reasonable and credible based on evidence and common sense.

If the jury finds that the prosecution can prove beyond reasonable doubt that Fan Minyi died as a result of the defendant's assault, then the three defendants can be found guilty of murder or manslaughter; If the jury finds that the prosecution cannot prove this, then the three defendants should be acquitted.

On 6 December 2000, after lengthy deliberation, the jury handed down by a majority of 6:1.

They argued that the three defendants had no intention or premeditated murder of Fan Minyi and therefore were not convicted of murder; But they also believed that the three defendants caused serious injury to Fan Minyi and did not do their best to rescue her or call the police for help, so they were convicted of manslaughter.

Judge Nguyen Van Dao accepted the jury's verdict and handed down the harshest sentences for the three defendants. He sentenced them to life in prison and stipulated that they must serve at least 20 years in prison before they are eligible to apply for a review of their sentences.

In announcing the verdict, Nguyen Vang Dao severely rebuked the three defendants for causing great harm to society, calling it the most cruel, perverted, depraved, violent, insensitive and brutal case he had never heard of.

He said that the three defendants treated Fan Minyi in a way that was worse than that of a beast, and that even a beast would not abuse her peers in this way.

In announcing his verdict, Judge Nguyen Vable Dao explained to the three defendants the basis for his sentence.

He said that there were three criteria for sentencing life imprisonment, namely the seriousness of the offence, the character and background of the accused, and the likelihood and consequences of reoffending.

All three guidelines apply to the three defendants, as the crimes they committed are extremely cruel and perverted, showing that they have psychological problems and abnormal sexual orientation.

The three defendants also did not have any valid reason or motive to abuse and kill Fan Minyi, but out of an incomprehensible evil and cruelty.

The three defendants did not contribute anything to society, but rather a threat and danger. If they are brought back into society, they are likely to harm innocent people again. Therefore, the courts have a duty to protect the public from them.

In addition to manslaughter, the three defendants face two other charges: preventing the legal burial of a body and unlawful confinement.

Since all three defendants pleaded guilty to preventing the legal burial of the bodies, the judge sentenced them to 3 years' imprisonment each; Chan Man Lok and Leung Wai Lun also pleaded guilty to unlawful confinement, and the judge sentenced them to 4 years' imprisonment each; But Liang Shengzu pleaded not guilty, and the judge sentenced him to six years in prison.

These two counts were executed concurrently with the crime of manslaughter.

All three defendants had mixed reactions when they heard the judge pronounce their verdicts.

Chen Wenle's face was expressionless, as if he had expected the result;

Liang Shengzu's eyes were red, and he seemed to be a little remorseful and sad;

Liang Weilun let out a long sigh, looking a little helpless and frustrated. Leung's brother, who was watching the trial, angrily slammed the glass window of the courtroom after hearing the verdict to express his dissatisfaction and protest.

All three defendants were unwilling to accept life imprisonment and appealed.

However, only Leung's appeal was approved by the court, while the appeals of Chan Man Lok and Leung Wai Lun were dismissed.

The Appeals Division judge found a major error in the original trial procedure when hearing Leung's appeal.

They point out that in issuing his guidance to the jury, the trial judge, while asking them to consider whether Leung Shengzu had collaborated with the other two defendants to murder Fan Minyi, he did not ask them to consider whether Leung's departure from the unit the day before the deceased was murdered was sufficient to terminate his conspiracy with the other two defendants.

The mistake may have affected the jury's verdict on manslaughter at Liang. As a result, the Appeals Chamber reversed the judgement and remanded the case for retrial.

During the retrial, Liang Shengzu changed his defense strategy. He no longer denies manslaughter, but admits that he participated in the beating and abuse of Fan Minyi, and apologizes and repents for this.

Defense lawyers interceded for him by saying that Mr. Leung played a different role throughout the case than the other two defendants. He said that during the beating and abuse, Liang Shengzu had advised the deceased to pay off her debts as soon as possible and hoped that she would be free as soon as possible;

And when he found that the deceased was dead, he also took the initiative to surrender to the police and did not evade responsibility;

Moreover, while in prison, he also actively attended Christian meetings and received teaching and help from the church; At the same time, after being given the opportunity to retry after a successful appeal last year, he has always felt deep troubles and guilt; So, at the last minute, he decided to plead guilty and asked the court for leniency.

When interceding for Liang, the lawyer said that he had served five years in prison and hoped that the judge would take into account his attitude of rehabilitation and confession and give him a lighter sentence.

In March 2004, Judge Ko Ka Lok, after hearing the details of the case, concluded that the crimes committed by Leung Shengzu were very serious and required a proper sentencing standard. He decided to change Liang's sentence from life in prison to 18 years in prison.

However, Liang Shengzu faced two other charges at trial: illegal confinement and preventing the legal burial of the body. As he did not appeal these two charges, the nine-year sentence granted to him by the trial judge remains in force. The defendant, Liang Shengzu, was released after completing his sentence in April 2014.

The skull of the deceased Fan Minyi in the case was the only evidence that could identify her, and after the preliminary trial, the skull could not be returned to the family of the deceased because the appeal process was still pending.

As a result, the skull was kept in the Kowloon Public Mortuary for the custody of the medical examiner. It was not until March 2004, when all appeal proceedings had been completed, that the family was notified that the skull could be recovered and cremated on 26 March.

The unit where the murder occurred was demolished 13 years after the murder (2012) and rebuilt into a commercial building called the Rayson Garwell Hotel in 2016.

During the construction of the hotel, three artistic pictures of Buddha statues were pasted on the exterior wall, probably to drive away evil spirits and bad luck.

The location of the murder is now an on-site restaurant.
