Republic of Cyprus (Greek: Κύπρος; Turkish: Kıbrıs), abbreviated as Cyprus, is an island country located on the border between Europe and Asia, in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, covering an area of 9,251 square kilometers. Cyprus is located at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Sea into West Asia, and the ancient Greeks moved to the island in 1500 BC. It was later ruled by Assyria, ancient Egypt, Persia, ancient Rome and Byzantium. In 333 BC, Alexander the Great took over the island from the Persians. It was ruled by the Ottoman Empire in 1571. It was ceded to the United Kingdom in 1878 and officially became a British colony in 1925. It declared independence on 16 August 1960 and became a member of the Commonwealth the following year. At present, Northern Cyprus is currently recognized only by Turkey as a political entity.
