Preface: According to Xinhua News Agency, the 2023 Global E-sports Tour China Station was officially launched in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province recently. This is currently the highest level of comprehensive e-sports international event authorized by the Global E-sports Federation (GEF) in China.
The word global is nominal, and the competition period lasts for several months, which is quite bluffing in the name. Although today's esports world still uses first-party esports events as the main theme, esports fans are not very interested in such comprehensive events organized by "esports federations". But as one of the world's two leading esports associations, there is still a need to talk about this event, and the future direction of comprehensive tournaments outlined by GEF.
A comprehensive tournament with a long duration
To understand the event, we first need to understand the organization behind the event, GEF
The Global Esports Federation (GEF) was officially established in Singapore on December 16, 2019, as an international organization for global e-sports, and has been committed to formulating more standardized, rigorous and healthy international standards to promote greater recognition of e-sports in international sports official organizations. GEF global members include the Olympic Council of Asia, the European Olympic Committee, the Commonwealth Games Federation, etc., with more than 130 member countries (or regions) in Asia, Europe, America, Africa and Oceania, and more than 25 global strategic partners.
The upcoming event, the Global Esports Tour (GET), is one of the flagship events of the Global Esports Federation, having previously held five successful tournaments in Los Angeles, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

It is worth mentioning that although Tencent and its royal event producer Hero Sports VSPO have cooperated with the organization, this global e-sports circuit is co-sponsored by the e-sports management committee of the China Cultural Management Association, together with Hua Sports Events (Beijing) Sports Management Co., Ltd. and the host city government, and organized by China Competition Federation (Beijing) Culture Development Co., Ltd. and Huati E-sports (Beijing) Sports Culture Co., Ltd. and relevant departments of the host city.
The 2023GET China competition format is divided into kick-off race, city race and final. Among them, the city competition is planned to be held from April to July 2023, with each city competition lasting 3 days; The finals are scheduled to be held in October 2023 over a five-day period. The event library is planned to be "Honor of Kings: International Edition" men/women's group, "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive", "Three Kingdoms of Dreams", "FIFA Football Online", "Peace Elite", "Dota 2", "League of Legends Mobile Game", etc. (depending on the actual situation).
Previously, when the event was held overseas, due to the small participation of domestic teams, it did not set off too much wave of public opinion in China. Among them, the most concerned by domestic players was the GET2022 held in Dubai in the middle of last year, with the participation of domestic CS:GO team Tianlu Tyloo. At present, with the 2023 GET China Station, it is in the preparation stage of selecting host cities, selecting participating projects, and carrying out business cooperation.
New direction of comprehensive competitions & paving the way for 2024GEGMost people may think that this is just a mediocre competition, but in the past few years, the exploration of GEF has allowed us to have some new expectations for this competition.
Take the 2022 Global Esports Games (GEG), a recent competition held by GEF, as an example, it is different from the current hot manufacturer-run events and the older generation of WCG comprehensive e-sports events. The 2022 Global Esports Games are more of a comprehensive esports exhibition on the whole, and the competition does not actually occupy the lion's share.
Although the competition part will take the form of a tour tournament to select the finalists in the long run, in the offline finals, the schedule of this Games can be said to be shorter. All five competitions were completed in three days. Correspondingly, there are many projects outside the competition venue at this grand event.
First of all, 2022GEG also hosted the Youth Esports Entertainment Carnival (GEFestival) - a vibrant celebration of esports culture and community esports activities, in order to attract more users and players in the esports community, and promote the connection of esports with players of all ages and economic levels. In addition, the Global Thought Leaders Conference, named GEFcon, was also held simultaneously in the venue, with more than 30 speakers from various fields such as esports, entertainment, technology, business, academia and other fields sharing their ideas and views through a series of keynote speeches and panel discussions.
The event also featured a series of workshops designed for esports athletes and teams. As the event drew to a close, GEF announced the imminent establishment of the Global Esports Academy. Through a series of education and related resources, the Academy will focus on helping the infrastructure development of the e-sports industry in various regions and the popularization of youth e-sports education.
With the aim of promoting the social value of e-sports and holding a comprehensive e-sports event, GEG has demonstrated its new positioning as a third-party comprehensive e-sports event.
It is worth mentioning that it is understood that GEG2024 will be held in China, and this tour that lands first is likely to pave the way for GEG2024.
