Plunged 28.5%! Dell's "de-Sinicization" schedule exposed: 100% withdrawal from China

In the era of mobile Internet, the penetration rate of mobile phones far exceeds that of computers, and the sense of existence of the latter has been weakened a lot.

According to market research agency Gartner, global shipments of Q4 PCs in 2022 totaled 65.3 million units, down 28.5% year-on-year.

This data has reached the lowest point in the PC market in nearly 20 years.

Among the well-known PC manufacturers, Dell's shipments fell the most, reaching 37%.

And according to Bloomberg, with the collapse of shipments, Dell had to lay off about 6,650 employees, and the number of employees fell to the lowest level since 2017.

It seems that the giants are not having a good time today.

However, compared with boosting sales, Dell's "de-Chinaization" seems to be more urgent.

Recently, some media exposed the specific timetable of Dell's "de-Chinaization", which is expected to withdraw 100% from China in the near future.

According to the plan, Dell will gradually eliminate Chinese manufacturing from the middle and downstream supply chain from 2025 and transfer production capacity back to the United States.

In the case of laptops, Dell aims to produce 60% of its products sold in the U.S. by 2025 outside of China.

By 2027, this figure will rise to 100%.

It is worth mentioning that Dell notebooks account for more than 40% of the total shipments in the US market.

In other words, by then, more than 40% of the computers shipped by Dell will not be made in China.

Desktop products have a similar arrangement.

In terms of IC component procurement, Dell's plan is to de-Sinicize in phases starting in 2026.

The first step is to exclude products manufactured Chinese mainland wafer fab by Chinese mainland IC vendors.

The second step is to exclude the products produced by Chinese mainland IC manufacturers in overseas wafer fabs, completely dissociating themselves from China.

In fact, as early as January this year, Japanese media quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that Dell notified suppliers at the end of 2022 to significantly reduce the use of chips made in China.

At the time, Dell planned to completely retire chips made in China in 2024.

From this point of view, Dell's "de-Chinaization" process in chips has been delayed by two years compared with the original report.

But in any case, for a company that has been in the Chinese market for 20 years, this decision is still very surprising.

According to media reports, the electronics industry giants have migrated China's industrial chain to other countries, and the current proportion is 20% by default.

And Dell's action is obviously faster than the industry level and more aggressive.

However, after the transfer of the industrial chain, whether it is capacity, quality or price, I am afraid that there will be a question mark.

For Chinese users, once this news was exposed, many netizens already had a tendency to boycott Dell.

In recent years, due to the influence of geopolitics, many technology giants are accelerating their withdrawal from China and practicing "de-Sinicization".

Among them, there are many Fortune 500 companies such as Apple, Toshiba, and Foxconn.

In the final analysis, strengthening one's own strength is true, and when the key technology is no longer overly dependent on foreign companies, it is really strong.
