Since the implementation of the sea ban in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Guangzhou, as the only trade port, has connected the exchanges between the East and the West, and a dazzling stream of goods has continued to flow from Guangzhou to the world.
Guangzhou 13 Lines was the only public bank in the country at that time engaged in export trade: tea, porcelain, folding fans... The ingenious Oriental manufacturing immediately set off a fiery "Chinese style". Among them, the well-made Chinese fans are loved by the European aristocracy, they are colorful, diverse and exquisitely ornamented, mostly black lacquer gold painting, burnt blue, embroidery. In the exhibition "Canton Export Fans: Chinese Fashion in the 18th and 19th Centuries" in the main museum, we can enjoy 97 pieces (sets) of export fans from Guangdong, such as elegant silk silver fans, exquisite paper folding fans, light feather fans, and ancient group fans, retracing the prosperous time of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.
The "Weekend Children's Museum" specially launched a series of themed activities around this exhibition, where children can not only gain an in-depth understanding of the historical and cultural origin of Canton export fans, perceive the "Made in the East" that is popular in the world, but also experience the fun of fan-making technology.
Fan no Beauty Feather Fan
Feather is one of the earliest materials used in the history of fan making, and the traditional Chinese style of feather fan is multi-flat fan, and the export feather fan is improved on the basis of folding fan. In the late 19th century, the feather fan became one of the standard items for Western women to attend balls. The beauty of the fan, the gold fan painted with lacquer
Painted gold, also known as mud gold painting lacquer, uses black lacquer or vermilion lacquer as the base, and uses gold dust to depict patterns. It is often used in furniture, teapots, fans and other crafts. Black lacquered gold fans became popular during the Qing Dynasty, and were mainly decorated with vines. During the activity, after appreciating the glorious gilded black lacquer gold folding fan, the children were able to experience the production method of black lacquer gold painting fan.
