Adolescence is recognized as a major challenge for adolescents.
Adolescent boys and girls are in the stage of physical and mental growth, often face maladaptation, rebellion, inferiority, loneliness, jealousy, sexual confusion, academic pressure, social pressure and other psychological changes brought about by negative effects, these psychological problems will be manifested from the emotional, behavioral and physiological aspects.
Depression, anxiety, autism, compulsion, horror, addiction... As teenagers grow up, these mental health issues have become topics that have to be talked about today.

According to the Statistics of the World Health Organization, adolescents have become the main group of people with depression. Manifestations of depression in adolescents include inferiority complex depression, pessimism and world-weariness, hallucinatory delusions, suicide attempts or behaviors, etc
Adolescent teenagers are like beautiful and colorful flowers, some of them are gorgeous roses, some are proud begonias, some are charming lavender, "every flower" has dazzling colors and unique characters.
But there are also more special - those teenagers with psychological problems, they are often not talkative, withdrawn, sensitive, they are not any of the brilliant flowers we mentioned above, and even in the eyes of others, they are sometimes as inconspicuous as the decorations on the walls.
However, this does not mean that they are not as vibrant as other "flowers", but they are budding, so they look unremarkable. For them, the process of waiting for the bloom is actually waiting for redemption.
Today,I want to introduce the movie "Wallflower Boy" directed by Stephen Zoborski and starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller, which tells the story of an autistic teenager who redeems himself with the help of friends and family.

Synopsis
At the beginning of the story, as a freshman on campus, Charlie (Rogan Lerman) discovers that his high school life is not as smooth as he thought: no one wants to have lunch with him, and no one wants to be friends with him.
And all this has to do with Charlie's psychological autism — Charlie's sensitive and inferior heart makes him afraid to communicate with people.

Fortunately, Mr. Anderson (Paul Luther), an English teacher at school, stumbles upon Charlie's hidden potential in literary creation in class, and thus becomes the first friend Charlie makes in high school.

While watching a school football game, Charlie meets seniors Padrick (Ezra Miller) and Sam (Emma Watson).
Patrick is funny and humorous, a confident gay boy; Sam is beautiful, lively, rebellious and delicate, and they quickly accept the ill-spoken Charlie.

Although Sam and Padric were friendly to Charlie, Charlie was still unsure whether he could join them. At the school dance that follows, the shy Charlie is tricked by the seniors for being alone and mistakenly eats a cake containing the stimulant drug, but sam shows up in time to rescue him.
The kind Sam decides to have Charlie join an "alliance" with her and several other seniors.
During this time, Charlie realizes that he has fallen in love with Sam, which becomes a little secret in his heart.
However, Charlie is always hallucinating because of psychological problems, and his timid heart does not think that he is worthy of the beautiful and enthusiastic Sam. At the same time, because he is too passive, Charlie and senior student Mary (Mae Whitman) become a couple.
Charlie and Mary
During a Truth or Dare, when asked if he would dare to kiss the prettiest girl in the room, Charlie, who was sitting next to Mary, kissed Sam on the other side, which brought the party to an impasse. It is clear that Charlie messed things up and Sam ignored him, which made Charlie feel very sad and remorseful.

After this, Charlie's psychological problems and hallucinations became more and more serious. In the process of protecting Patrick from ridicule and bullying by his ex-boyfriend Brad (Johnny Simmons) and others, Charlie beats up two seniors, but this chaotic situation also makes his condition relapse.
Sam and Charlie reconcile because of Charlie's righteous actions, Mary forgives Charlie, and Padrick regards Charlie as one of his best friends.
Just when Charlie thought he was having the best friendship in the world, the arrival of graduation season once again shattered Charlie's beautiful fantasies.
Both Sam and Patrick will enter the university to start a new campus life, and Charlie, who will continue to complete the rest of his high school studies, means that they will have to face separation.
Sam got her wish and got into the university of her choice, and the day before leaving the town, Charlie came to bid her farewell. This time, Charlie took the initiative to kiss Sam, and the two finally expressed their hearts to each other.
But in the process of making love to Sam, Charlie once again hallucinates, and this time, Charlie's accumulated memories are completely awakened.
It turns out that Charlie's autism is related to depression and his aunt Helen (Melanie Linsky) who sexually assaulted Charlie several times as a child. A delirious Charlie returns home with suicidal thoughts, but Charlie's sister Candice (Nina Dubov) calls the police in time to save him.
In the movie, Charlie collapsed in the snow because of hallucinations
Accompanied by the doctor's psychotherapy and the protection of his family, Charlie slowly untied the knot, and he finally learned to save himself in the love of those around him.
When Sam and Padrick are seen again, the redeemed Charlie sits between Sam and Padric like he is going out for a ride for the first time.
Only this time, unlike the last time, Charlie stood in the back seat of the car, as Sam had done, raising his hands, watching the lights in the tunnel, enjoying the joys of the moment, and then, loudly and firmly, saying: We are infinite.
Spotlight on adolescent depression
In "Wallflower Boy", Charlie is not born an autistic teenager, because his childhood experience caused him to suffer great psychological trauma and led to mental disorders.
In real life, it is not uncommon for teenagers like Charlie to have psychological problems caused by acquired social factors.
Adolescent mental health problems have become a major factor affecting adolescent health, with depression being the number one cause of illness and disability among adolescents.
According to the "Healthy China Action (2019-2030)", the prevalence of depression in China is as high as 2.1%. Adolescents account for about a quarter of the population receiving treatment for mental illness each year.
▲Depression is showing a trend of younger age
Sexual abuse, school violence, and pressure on adolescents on all sides can lead to mental health problems and eventual depression.
Lin Yihan, the author of "Fang Siqi's First Love Paradise", who suffered from depression due to sexual assault in childhood, has attracted extensive social attention and discussion.
▲ "It turns out that man's suffering to others is unimaginative. ——" Fang Siqi's First Love Paradise"
In the book, a sentence from Fang Siqi's mother cuts off the signal that Fang Siqi is trying to ask for help, and the author Lin Yihan's family is also one of her "pushers" to the abyss of depression.
No one knows themselves, no one can talk to them, no one gives help, these are all important reasons for the aggravation of the condition of depressed patients.
In recent years, scientists have found that the pathogenesis of depression is related to the release of monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain, which is the depression monoamine hypothesis. That is to say, patients with long-term depression not only cannot heal themselves, but must also receive professional treatment from psychologists.
Therefore, the timely treatment of patients with mild to moderate depression has become the fundamental premise for curing their depression.
But in the past, when people did not have a concept of depression, no one realized that psychological problems were also a disease, and even this disease needed to be supplemented by drugs for long-term treatment.
Especially when adults face children with initial depressive symptoms, their neglect of the patient's mental health problems is more serious. Even parents who have a concept of depression do not necessarily have a correct understanding of the symptoms of depression.
For example, when most people talk about the manifestations of depression, they only think of depression and sadness. However, studies by foreign scholars have shown that the precursors of depression in adolescents may not be so, and the early symptoms they show may also be irritability, irritability, and unwarranted resentment.
If these actions cannot be understood, then the indifferent treatment of parents and others is very likely to cause this group of teenagers with depression to miss the best treatment period, so that they need to take drugs to treat depression for the rest of their lives, and even before they can receive treatment, they have already ended their lives.
How can we save the lives of these adolescent depressed patients and prevent their flowers from withering, the first thing to do is to give more care to the adolescent depressed population.
On World Suicide Prevention Day 9/10, which just passed this year, the World Health Organization issued a theme slogan of "Working Together to Prevent Suicide". Let depressed people truly feel the protection and love of the people around them, and give them more warmth, in order to help them get out of the haze and overcome depression.
In "The Wallflower Boy", when Charlie's parents learn that he was sexually assaulted by Aunt Helen when he was a child, Charlie's parents first hug Charlie, telling him that it is not his fault and apologizing for the fact that they ignored Charlie's heart in the past.
Charlie's sister and brother have been in the hospital with Charlie.
Charlie's friends wrote to him, telling him they loved him.
Charlie's psychiatrist said to him, "We can't choose wherewe can come from, but we can choose where we go from there." Although we can't decide our past, we can decide our own future, and you have to believe that you will have a good future.
It was the actions of these people who redeemed Charlie and gave him the strength to redeem himself.
At the end of the film, when Charlie says out loud the words "We are infinite." Then we see in Charlie the infinity, the infinity of the world and the infinity of life.
As Patrick said to Charlie, "You observe things and understand them." You are a wallflower. ”(You see things, and you understand. You're a wallflower.) Wallflower is also full of vitality, and depressed people can also become beautiful flowers.
Charlie in the film is undoubtedly lucky, someone approached his closed heart, discovered his unique heart, and guarded his growth.
We may not be "Charlie," but we can also be the "Patrick" and "Sam" of other people's lives, understanding people who seem different with a pair of discovery eyes and empathy.
Please believe together that the budding flowers will eventually bloom the day, believe that the world, love and hope, never leave.
