Indonesia's largest ethnic group, the Javanese, has a total population of about 140 million. The Javanese are not indigenous to Indonesia, but originated in southern China, about 2,500 years ago, Javanese ancestors from China through Taiwan, the Philippine Islands transited to Indonesia, and later became the country of Java. Unexpectedly, in such a distant Southeast Asia, many of the people here also originated from China, which is a veritable birthplace of mankind.
