Gu Mei, formerly known as Gu Jiami, was born in 1929 in Guangzhou, China, her father Gu Taming worked in the press and was good at painting, Gu Mei also received art education from a young age, and then had to give up her studies due to war.
In 1951, Gu Mei officially entered the music world, joined Shaw in 61 years, the main task in the early days was to sing behind the scenes, and sang three interludes in the movie "No Love" in 1962, namely "No Love", "Dream" and "Mountain Song", which became famous in one fell swoop.
In 1965, she starred in the film "Little Skylark" and achieved success, establishing her status as an amphibian singer.
Gu Mei, who shined in the acting world, did not forget the feelings of painting when she was a child.
In order to realize her dream, from 1963, Gu Mei studied painting with Zhao Shaoang, a master of the Lingnan School at that time; in 1969, she studied painting with Huang Junbi's senior disciple Hu Nianzu in Taiwan; in 1974, she studied modern ink painting with Lu Shoukun, the representative painter of Hong Kong landscape painting... After years of accumulation, I have finally established my own unique painting style.
Gu Mei's paintings are mostly based on writing clouds and mist, especially the landscape in the mind, with overlapping lines and layers like ancient monuments, and the open and misty space makes the viewer integrate into the soft painting environment.
She not only absorbed the light and shadow characteristics of Zhao Shaoang's Lingnan School of painting, but also absorbed the hazy imagery of Hu Nianzu's freehand landscapes, and also learned Lü Shoukun's philosophical ideas of innovating ink painting.
Her paintings not only reflect the natural and heartfelt artistic conception of traditional Chinese landscape painting, but also organically combine with the light and shadow effects of Western painting to form a unique interest.
Gu Mei's paintings were highly appreciated by Zhang Daqian, Zao Wou-ki and other painting masters. It is reported that Zao Wou-Ki once proposed to exchange his paintings with Gu Mei, and Zhang Daqian also wrote inscriptions and made up scenes in Gu Mei's five paintings, and even praised this talented and artistic woman with verses such as "The song is like Han Eyun stopped, and the painting is like Mi Lao Splashing".
For the love of the two painting masters, Gu Mei only said lightly: "These are just a kind of politeness and encouragement from them." ”
