The return of samples from Chang'e-5 revealed magmatic activity on the moon 2 billion years ago

The National Space Administration announced the scientific research results of the continental Chang'e-5 lunar sample. Through the study of lunar samples, scientists have accurately determined that the cessation of lunar magma occurred 2.03 billion years ago.

The first batch of samples of Chang'e-5 was distributed to domestic scientists on July 12, 2021, and five sample distributions have been completed, totaling 198 copies of 65.1 grams.

In 2021, a team of scientists confirmed that lunar volcanic activity could continue until 2 billion years ago through the study of basalt in lunar samples collected by Chang'e-5, refreshing human understanding of lunar magmatic activity and thermal evolution history.

Academician Li Xianhua, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences: Our geology and geophysics team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences achieved good achievements in 2021, publishing three articles in "Nature", accurately determining the age of the Chang'e-5 lunar soil sample to be 2.03 billion years, and it was believed that 3 billion years would end at the latest to 2.8 billion years.

Academician Li Xianhua said that through the study of Chang'e-5 lunar samples, human understanding of the moon has been deepened, so they also look forward to the Chang'e-6 mission to bring more new discoveries.

Academician Li Xianhua, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences: The Aiken Basin in Antarctica is very large, more than 2,000 kilometers, and it is the largest impact crater in our inner solar system, which is likely to reveal a lot of information about the early formation of the moon. Chang'e-6 will be the first time that humans will go to the far side of the moon to take samples and return, and this sample brings information about the early evolution of the moon has very important scientific significance, so we are all looking forward to it.
