The "Lonely" Sardinian Wine Easy Guide II - White Grape Varieties

author:Meaning

Of Italy's two Mediterranean islands, Sicily is more seamlessly integrated into the whole of Italy. And Sardinia is a region of its own, always shrouded in a certain mystery. La Costa Smeralda, The Emerald Coas – The Emerald Coast, along the northeastern edge is home to the playgrounds of the rich and the habitat of luxury yachts, but its steep rocky cliffs, fascinating caves, grottoes, sand dunes and hinterland wilderness belonging to shepherds and sheep are not well known to the world outside Sardinia.

Italy has 20 administrative regions and 20 wine regions, and Sardinia is one of the loneliest, most rugged and mountainous wine regions in Italy.

AMONG DRY WHITE WINES, THE VIMONTINO VERMENTINO GRAPE HAS BECOME A STAR VARIETY IN SARDINIA. It loves heat and dryness, is a very vibrant, nutrient-rich plant that needs to be "abused" in the most barren soil possible to suppress this vitality, and the grapes must strive to take deep roots in the granite soil to withstand the hot winds from North Africa.

Vermentino has a strong aroma, especially in Sardinia it is reminiscent of the intoxicating aromas of wild herbs in the Mediterranean scrubs, especially in the northeast of Gallura, where the concentration can reach heights unmatched in other Mediterranean regions. When you sip a glass, you'll taste a hint of the sea and can expect some salty minerals, lemon, white flowers, and bitter almonds.

The most grown white grape in Sardinia is Nuragus. This grape has been on the island since the Phoenicians came to the island in the 12th century and is known by several names, including Abbondosa, Preni Tineddus, and Axina Scacciadeppidus.

All of these titles — "Abundance," "Grab the buckets," and my favorite, "The grape that pays off debts." All agreed with the amazing growth trend of grapes.

Traditionally, this excess has resulted in soft, unassuming wines. However, winemakers are increasingly aware that the grapes can produce convincingly light, delicate, accessible wines with low alcohol content but high flavor, with citrus fruits, green apples and mild spicy flavors.

The wines that best embody the spirit of Nuragus are grown in the Campidano Plain around Nuoro, Cagliari and Oristano in the south. Although it is one of the most cultivated varieties on the island, it is one of the lesser-known Sardinian wine varieties that is exported in very small quantities each year, this grape variety is not grown anywhere else on the planet, so this is indeed one of the Sardinian wines you need to try on the island.

Some of the better Nuragus di Cagliari DOC wines have mouthwatering notes of sour apples and almonds, combined with a crisp acidity, making them related to wines such as Vinho Verde in Portugal and Albariño in Spain. Although harder to find than the vermentino wines mentioned above, Nuragus di Cagliari wines from Argiolas (known as "Sèlegas"), Meloni and Trexenta are well worth checking on hot summer days, when their refreshing acidity will liven up squid salad or some other light lemon seafood dish.
