Mauritania's "Eyes of Africa"

Mauritania (officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, a sovereign state in northwest Africa) has a fascinating circular surface structure called the Guelb er Richat.

This surface structure is also known as the "Eye of Africa" or "Eye of the Sahara". More formally known as the Richat, the site is located in the Western Sahara Desert in Mauritania. On the ground, it is about 25 miles (about 40 kilometers) wide.

Scientists believe that this eye-like surface structure is the result of meteor impacts. To this day, the prevailing theory is that the structure was created by uplifted rock, which was then formed by constant erosion by wind and water.
