The atmosphere at the show was still positive. More growers are exhibiting this year than ever before, mostly from Kenya, Ecuador and Colombia, with a growing number of growers seemingly looking to expand in existing and new markets. But they also face challenges. Growers in Ecuador are facing insufficient air freight capacity and high prices. The same is true in Kenya. Colombia is affected by La Niña, where prolonged rainfall affects the quality of flower and horticultural products. There is also the chaotic political situation, which has led some growers or investors to decide to put off on their expansion plans. In every country, the cost of growing, harvesting and transporting flowers is increasing.

A special highlight of the exhibition was the "Maritime Flowers Conference" held the day before the exhibition, a three-hour conference that attracted a large number of participants from the global supply chain. The 400 conference seats were fully booked, with 200 more on the waiting list.

In recent years, interest in transporting flowers by sea has been increasing, so HPP Exhibitions held the "Maritime Flowers Conference". Last June, the IFTEX conference was held in Nairobi, Kenya, for the first time, and this is the second edition. "Sea freight will definitely get a piece of the market. Not only is this a sustainable, lower-cost option, but it also provides opportunities to enter new markets and transport different types of flowers, some of which are always too light or heavy to be transported by air. "China, Japan, the United States and Australia, due to the high price of air freight, the current market is not large, but it can be changed by sea." "Colombia has been transporting flowers by sea for many years, and the number is increasing year by year, with 90% of flowers from chrysanthemum grower El Capiro transported by sea.

Because of the good results, the conference on the theme will be held again at IFTEX in Nairobi in June 2023, which will focus more on the technology of transporting flowers by sea.

2. Svensson provides climate solutions to Mexican businesses

In recent years, with the help of Svensson Climate Solutions, the quality of greenhouse flower production in Oleoflor, Mexico, has been effectively guaranteed.

With the dream of producing the most beautiful flowers in Mexico, in 2019 María Perez founded the Oreo Flower Company, which mainly produces roses, as well as flower varieties such as tulips, orchids, buttercups, gerberas, dahlia and bellflowers.

Producing high-quality flowers requires careful management, good irrigation conditions and fertile soil. But above all, it is necessary to create perfect climatic conditions for plant growth. The La Manzanilla de la Paz, where the company is located, has never had such large-scale flower production before. Therefore, it is important to receive adequate technical expertise. In the climate management of flower greenhouses, the use of shade curtains has a significant effect on the light, temperature and humidity of the greenhouse, which is one of the recommendations given by Svensson's experts.

Spring temperatures in Mexico rise rapidly compared to winter, and good ventilation in greenhouses is necessary for plant growth. However, it is also important to protect flower crops from pests and insects. "Thanks to the Svensson insect net, Oreo Flowers is able to keep all rose-infesting pests, especially thrips, out of the greenhouse without sacrificing ventilation, which is important during spring temperatures." By using Svensson's Harmony scattering screen, the light and temperature of the greenhouse can be better controlled, and it can also be used to keep warm and save energy on cold nights. The use of scattered screens helps to improve the light quality of the greenhouse, thereby promoting crop growth and "icing on the cake" for plants.
