1 Samuel 16:1-23
King Saul disobeyed God's instructions, so God told the prophet Samuel that he regretted making Saul king. Saul lied to Samuel, but insisted that he was doing what God commanded. Samuel told Saul, "Because you have rejected the commandment of the Lord, he has also rejected you as king" (1 Samuel 15:23). Samuel turned away and never saw Saul again.
The prophet Samuel grieved that God had rejected Saul as king. God told Samuel of his future plans, "Go and get some olive oil, and I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem, and I have chosen one of his sons as king."
Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul would have killed me when he heard the news.
The Lord said, "Take a heifer and say, 'I have come to offer a sacrifice to the Lord.' You invite Jesse to eat the sacrificial meat, and I will instruct you to be the one you are anointing. So Samuel did as the Lord commanded.
Samuel saw Jesse's son Eliabh at the sacrifice and thought to himself, "This man standing before me must be the one who is the main anointing." But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance and tall stature, for I have chosen him not for him." Because I don't see things the way the world does, people only focus on appearances, and I focus on the inside. ”
Jesse called his second son, Abinada, and told him to walk past Samuel, who said, "The Lord did not choose him either."
Jesse called Shamma over, and Samuel said, "The Lord does not choose this one."
Jesse brought each of his seven sons to Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, "None of them are the chosen ones of the Lord."
The prophet Samuel asked Jesse, "Are all your sons here?"
Jesse replied, "And there's the youngest, David, who is herding sheep." Samuel said, "You sent someone to call him back; Until he returns, we cannot sit down and eat sacrificial meat. ”
So Jesse sent someone to call his younger son back. He is full of red light, his appearance is handsome, and his body is fit. The Lord said, "Come and anoint him!" He is the person I chose. ”
Samuel took out the olive oil and anointed him in front of his brothers. From that day on, the Spirit of the Lord showed power in David.
Meanwhile, Saul's spirit was tormented by demons and was in a very bad mood. His attendants said to him, "One of Jesse's sons played the piano very well. He is good at music, and the Lord is with him. When you are tortured, let the person play the piano and you will feel better. ”
So, whenever the demon possessed Saul and tortured him, David took up the harp and played it. At first, Saul liked David so much that he asked him to carry weapons for himself.
