"When You Are Old" is a poem written by William Butler Yeats in 1893, which is Yeats's warm and sincere love poem dedicated to his friend Maude Gang, full of affection and touching heart.
In 1889, at the age of 23, Yeats first met the beautiful actress Maud Gang. She was twenty-two years old, outstanding in beauty and slender.
Everything seemed to be predestined by heaven, just such a shocking glimpse, but the sky collapsed, he was shot by an arrow from Cupid in an instant, and he was hopeless from then on.
Yeats described his first encounter with Maud Gang: "She stood by the window, with a large cluster of apple blossoms blooming beside her; She is radiant, as if she were a petal drenched in sunlight. Yeats was deeply in love with her, but hopeless because of the noble image she had formed in his mind, and the talented poet became timid and sensitive, restricting all edges, not daring to alarm, not to disturb. Therefore, although the love affair tormented him, he never expressed his feelings to Gang.
In July 1891, Yeats misunderstood the message she had sent to herself, thinking that she had made a hint of love for herself, and immediately ran to propose to her for the first time in a rush of interest. She refused, saying that she could not marry him, but in order not to embarrass the poet, she made friends with the poet.
However, Yeats still believes that it is not that love is not coming, but only because it is not yet time.

On January 28, 1939, the ailing Yeats died in France. One of his last wishes, hoping that Maude Gang would come to his funeral, was also rejected by Maud Gang.
