Born in Los Angeles in 1905, Huang Liushuang has a long and rich career, spanning silent films, sound films, TV dramas, stage plays and radio dramas, and she has cooperated with many famous Hollywood actors to shoot more than 60 film masterpieces such as "Moon Palace Treasure Box", "Chinatown Bustling Dream" and "Shanghai Express". Huang Liushuang is recognized as the first Asian-American movie star in Hollywood, she occupies a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is the first Chinese actress to stay a star in Hollywood.

In the early twentieth century, when Hollywood was still deeply rooted in racism and the Chinese Exclusion Act was still law, Huang called for greater Asian representation in Hollywood and challenged stereotypes of Asians, according to The Guardian.

In a 1933 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Huang Liushuang said: "Why is the Chinese on the screen almost always the villain in the film, and such a cruel villain - murderous, treacherous, like a snake in the grass." "We're not that kind of people."

Huang Liushuang debuted on the screen at the age of 14, and starred for the first time in "The Toll of the Sea" three years later. According to NPR, she is often assigned to racist and underpaid roles. For example, in "Shanghai Express," Huang Liushuang earned only $6,000, while the white actress Marlene Dietrich, who worked with her, earned $78,166.

According to the New York Times, despite being considered one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood, Huang Liushuang was never chosen as the heroine of a romantic love movie because the law at the time prohibited people of different races from kissing on screen.

In order to escape the racist restrictions of Hollywood, Huang Liushuang traveled to Europe in 1928 to find more opportunities to appear in English, German and French-speaking films.

In 1960, Huang Liushuang gained a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The following year, she tragically died.

U.S. Mint official Wentrice Gibson called Wentrice Gibson in a statement about the coin "a courageous advocate for the representation and more dimensional role of Asian-American actors."

In honor of and honor American women pioneers, the U.S. Mint released the 2022 "American Women 25 Cent Coin Project," which features the heads of five female pioneers on the 25 cent coin. In addition to Huang Liushuang, coins have been released: writer Maya Angelou, astronaut Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation, and women's suffragette Nina Otero-Warren.
