According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean government announced the list of amnesty for "Guangfu Festival" on August 12, and 1693 people were granted amnesty, commutation or reinstatement, of which Lee Jae-yong, vice president of Samsung Electronics and head of Samsung, and Shin Dong-bin, president of Lotte Group, were granted amnesty and reinstatement, and former President Lee Myung-bak was excluded from the list.

This is the first amnesty granted by the South Korean government since South Korean President Yoon Seok-wook came to power. Earlier in the day, Yin Xiyue said that the amnesty was mainly to improve people's livelihood and restore the economy.

In January 2021, Lee was arrested in court after being sentenced to 2 and a half years in prison for bribery in the second instance. The court found that Lee had bribed Park Geun-hye and her close associate Choi Soon for 8.68 billion won (about 51 million yuan) in exchange for government support for his succession to Samsung Group. In August of that year, Lee was released from prison on parole, but remained restricted from practicing. The grant of amnesty and reinstatement means that Lee Jae-yong can resume business activities.

Mr. Lee, 80, was sentenced to 17 years in prison in 2020 for embezzlement and bribery. In June, he applied for a stay of custody on the grounds that his diabetes was worsening. On June 28, Lee Myung-bak was granted a three-month suspension of imprisonment by prosecutors.

Yonhap News Agency previously reported that Yoon Seok-yue and Lee Myung-bak were once "wrongdoers." In 2018, when Yoon Seok-yue was the director of the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office, he directed the investigation of Lee Myung-bak's corruption case, and eventually arrested Lee Myung-bak. He was also appreciated by Moon jae-in for this, and was appointed attorney general in 2019.

Xin Dongbin, 67, was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison with a four-year suspended sentence in October 2019 on suspicion of corruption and malfeasance. (Overseas Network Liu Qiang)
