Early life
Robin Williams was born in 1951 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was an executive at for The Mercury Division of Ford Lincoln. His mother was a model in Jackson, Mississippi. In 2001, in a television interview inside the actor's studio, Williams argued that his humor had been importantly influenced by his mother in the early days, and he tried to get her to laugh to gain attention.
Williams attended public elementary school at Gorton Elementary School in Lake Forest and junior high school at Deer Road Junior High School. He said he was a quiet kid who didn't overcome shyness until he joined the high school's drama department.
In late 1963, when Williams was 12 years old, his father was sent to Detroit for work. The family moved to a 20-acre, 40-room farmhouse on the outskirts of Mount Bloomfield, Michigan, where he attended a private Detroit country day school. He excelled in school, was part of the school's wrestling team, and was elected class president.
At the age of 16, his father retired early and the family moved to Tiburon, California. After they moved, Williams attended Redwood High School in nearby Larksbo. When he graduated in 1969, he was named "the least likely person to succeed" and "the most interesting person" by his classmates. After graduating from high school, Williams enrolled in Political Science at Claremont Boys' College in Claremont, California; He later dropped out of school to pursue an acting career.

Williams studied drama for three years at Marin College, a community college in Kentfield, California. In 1973, Williams received a full scholarship from the Juilliard School of Music in New York (Group 6, 1973-1976). He was one of 20 students admitted to the freshman class, and he and Christopher Reeve were the only two who were admitted to the school's advanced program that year by John Haussman.
In the summers of 1974, 1975 and 1976, Williams worked as a restaurant handyman at a restaurant in Sausalito, California. In his junior year in 1976, he left the Juilliard School at Haussmann's suggestion, and Haussmann said the Juilliard School could no longer teach him anything. Another of his teachers at the Juilliard School, Gerald Friedman, said Williams was a "genius" and that the school's conservative and classical style of education did not suit him; No one was surprised by his departure.

Williams had a cohabitation relationship with comedian Alanne Bussler. In June 1978, he married his first wife, Valerie Villadi. Villadi and Williams met in 1976 when he worked as a bartender at a tavern in San Francisco. Their son was born in 1983. Villadi and Williams divorced in 1988.
On April 30, 1989, Williams married Garces, who was six months pregnant. They have two children. In March 2008, Garces filed for divorce from Williams on the grounds that there were irreconcilable differences between the two sides.
Williams married his third wife, graphic designer Susan Schneider, in St. Helena, Calif., on October 22, 2011. The two lived in a house in Sea Cliff, San Francisco, California.
In August 2014, Williams, 63, committed suicide at his home on Paradise Reef, California.
