It is a plant of the genus Cyperaceae. The stem is spherical to short cylindrical, 15–30 cm tall and 8–12 cm in diameter, dark green, raised at the top, 13 ridges, ridged high white with brown halo, densely arranged spines. The corolla is funnel-shaped, at the top of the raw stem, the flowers are mostly, 5–7.5 cm long, 6–8 cm in diameter, the outer lobes are yellowish-green, the apex is red, the inner lobes are bright yellow, the base is red, and fragrant. Flowering period is from May to July. The fruit is nearly round, red, and can be maintained until the following year.

It is native to southern Texas to northern Mexico. Prefers plenty of sunshine and good ventilation. The vitality is very strong. It can withstand low temperatures of 0 °C in winter. If the temperature is suitable, it can be grown all year round. The soil quality requirements are not strict.
