The Norwegian University of Technology (NTNU), Norway's leading engineering and technology centre, is located in Trondheim, South Trundage, and is a member of the Alliance of Five Nordic Universities. The earliest history of the Norwegian University of Technology can be traced back to the establishment of the Trondrome Society in 1760, which was recognized by the Norwegian Royal Family in 1767 and renamed the Royal Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH), and in 1996, the Norwegian Institute of Technology merged with the Trondheim Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology to form the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. In 2016, the Norwegian University of Technology merged with Høgskolen i Gjøvik and Høgskolen i Ålesund university colleges (Høgskolen i Ålesund) to form the new Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

NTNU ranks 113th in the world in the 2022 QS World Rankings for Engineering and Technology. Subdivisions: Petroleum Engineering (37), Architecture (51-100), as well as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electronics and Electrical Engineering ranked 101-150th in the world, respectively.
