The remaining gull is a national first-class wild protected animal. Kangbao County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, is known as the "Hometown of Chinese Gulls". At present, more than 8,000 remaining gulls are breeding and roosting in the Kangba noor National Wetland Park in Kangbao County.

Ma Xirong, 56, a surgeon in Kangbao County, began working on wild bird conservation and rescue in 2009. In 2018, Kangbao County established the Relict Gull Protection Association, with Ma Xirong as the president, leading everyone to rescue and treat more than 1,300 wild animals, including the remaining gulls, and driving the formation of a good local trend of protecting wild animals and loving the natural ecology.
