Guangdong Enping Qixing Pit found the national second-level protected wild animal chestnut-throated bee tiger

Guangzhou, October 21 (Cheng Jingwei Linyin) According to the News of the Forestry Bureau of Guangdong Province on the 21st, a group of national second-level protected wild animals - chestnut-throated bee tigers were recently found in the Enping Qixingkeng Provincial Nature Reserve in Guangdong Province, which is the first time that this species has been recorded in the reserve.

According to reports, recently, the staff of the reserve passed through an open flat land during field investigation and suddenly found a group of birds (about 30), which were beautiful and elegant in shape and had metallic feathers. Experts from the Institute of Zoology of the Guangdong Academy of Sciences identified this bird as a chestnut-throated bee tiger of the Buddhist monk family Bee Tiger family.

Chestnut-throated bee tiger is slightly larger, elegant, black with black eye stripes, green head and back, red iris, black mouth and feet, blue waist and tail, yellow chin, chestnut throat, and light green abdomen. The lower wings are orange-yellow when flying, and they often congregate in open areas to hunt, perched on bare branches or wires, and lazily glide in search of insects.

Chestnut-throated bee tiger mainly feeds on bees, dragonflies, butterflies, and other insects, specializing in catching insects in flight, and bee insects have zero chances of escaping in front of it, just like small animals in front of tigers, so they are called bee tigers. As one of the most beautiful birds in China, the chestnut-throated bee tiger is not only good-looking but also powerful. Its flight technology is superb, it can make rapid flight, gliding, hovering, rapid rotation and pitch and other difficult movements, and can also emit vibrato when flying.

According to the staff of the Forestry Bureau of Guangdong Province, in the "List of Wild Animals under National Key Protection" released in February 2021, the chestnut-throated bee tiger was upgraded from the original "three wild animals under national key protection" to "national second-level protected wild animals", which shows the rarity and important ecological value of this species.

It is reported that guangdong Enping Qixingkeng Provincial Nature Reserve has actively promoted biodiversity conservation in recent years and provided an excellent ecological environment for the reproduction of wild animals and plants. The management office of the reserve will increase the protection efforts, strengthen the depth and breadth of monitoring of rare and endangered wild animals and plants, effectively play the positive role of science popularization and education, escort the beautiful forest spirits, and continuously promote the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.
