The Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt has announced the discovery of new artifacts at the Saqqara necropolis.
Egypt unveiled a series of ancient artifacts found in the Saqqara cemetery in Egypt. Located 15 km south of the famous pyramids of the Giza Plateau, the archaeological site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to Mustafa Vaziri, chairman of Egypt's Supreme Committee on Antiquities, recent discoveries include 250 2,500-year-old painted sarcophagi with "well-preserved" mummies and 150 bronze statues representing ancient gods such as Anubis, Amunmin, Osiris, Isis, Nefertum, Baster or Hasol. A sarcophagus may contain a chapter of the Book of the Dead, a set of papyrus rolls covered with funeral formulas that are usually placed next to the deceased. The discovery was transferred to the laboratory of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo's Tahrir Square.
