Snails are actually hermaphrodites
First of all, snails have no gender, and the vast majority of snail species are hermaphrodites. That is, they have both male and female reproductive organs. But that doesn't mean that snails can breed on their own.
When snails are adults and their reproductive organs are mature enough to produce healthy germ cells, they choose to breed offspring with another adult snail. By making close contact and wrapping around each other's bodies, both snails excrete male germ cells and transmit them to each other's bodies, binding to each other's female germ cells. The benefit of this is to increase the genetic diversity of the offspring and improve the ability of the population to adapt to the environment.
