Babylon's fall player numbers fell to one man

Babylon's fall player numbers fell to one man

Last week's struggling live service hack on PC slashed the Fall of Babylon left only one concurrent player, which could mark the end of interest in the game. The efforts of Square Enix and PlatinumGames have been flagged as failures by nearly every corner of the gaming community, and although babylon's fall developers reiterated their commitment to the title, it didn't seem to improve.

Although it was ostensibly ambitious at launch, the fall of Babylon failed to attract a large player base. Released in March of this year, the game was almost immediately branded as a failure due to poor initial sales and a sharp drop in the number of players after its release. While The Fall of Babylon does seem promising in previews, demos, and trailers — not to mention that it comes from the famous studio PlatinumGames — critics and players alike have denounced the game's problematic art design, complex narrative, and lack of variety. In Babylon's Fall Review, live-service games are described as repetitive, and it seems that most gamers have long since abandoned the game because the game released a best-selling, critically acclaimed game within a year, which brings additional misfortune.

The situation doesn't seem to improve with this Square Enix release, as the VGC reports that babylon's Fall's number of concurrent players on Steam dropped to just one player on Wednesday, May 4. That's the lowest number of players the game has been given, but it's not doing much better after May 4, as the same Steam chart data suggests that its highest number of players last week was just 77 concurrent players. Interestingly, that number is actually higher than Babylon's Fall's 30-day average, when there were only 64 simultaneous online players.

This information is certainly surprising, although the game's shortcomings are no secret anymore. The Fall of Babylon had very few players on the day of its release, but even a similarly controversial release, such as Marvel's Avengers, never dropped to just one player in the Steam chart data. This is especially bad considering that Fall of Babylon is an online multiplayer game – a subtype that survives with a large number of concurrent players.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the Fall of Babylon is that the game world seems to have completely forgotten about it. The writing of this game seems to be on the wall, as Square Enix may end up simply shutting down its servers and packing things up. While this will infuriate players who have already purchased the game, it is unlikely to save Babylon's Fall without a full overhaul.
