New archaeological finds

The site was discovered by the archaeological exploration team organized by the Municipal Institute of Archaeology and Nanjing University in 2020 during the archaeological pre-construction work on the commercial and residential project plots of Lu Mu Lao Street on both sides of Yuanhetang in Xiangcheng High-tech Zone.

The total excavation area of the site is 1618 square meters, which is divided into 4 areas, of which the second district is the most abundant. The first phase of field excavation work began in April 2021 and lasted for 6 months, and finally confirmed that the site was a group of Ming Dynasty gold brick kiln sites, covering 48 relics, including 12 kiln sites, 12 ash pits, 9 wall sites, 7 wells, 7 roads, 1 ditch, and more than 50 cultural relics such as Ming and Qing dynasty gold bricks.

Since the beginning of this year, the Municipal Archaeological Research Institute has carried out further excavations and studies in the second district of the site, and a rare Ming Dynasty brick kiln called "Lu Mu Kiln" by archaeologists has been discovered.

"Lu Mu Kiln" has two kinds of kiln beds, which is the largest, most well-preserved and most complex brick kiln found in this archaeological excavation, and its kiln shape is relatively rare in archaeological history, which is unique to the Lu Mu area and reflects the unique style of Suzhou Jiangnan civilization.

In addition, the drying area and large sedimentation ponds that serve as supporting facilities for brick kilns, including the brick road along the river that transports products such as gold bricks to the wharf, have also been recently discovered.

"These new archaeological discoveries have revealed the deep historical and cultural origins of the Lumu region. Further excavation of the site is conducive to strengthening the study of the briquette firing process in the Ming and Qing dynasties, digging deeper into the historical depth of Jiangnan culture, and revealing the cultural connotation of Suzhou as the birthplace of Wu culture and the core city of Jiangnan culture. Liu Fangfang, a researcher at the Municipal Archaeological Research Institute and the leader in charge of the project, said.

In the next stage, Liu Fangfang and her team will further explore the cultural relics buried in the second district, and on this basis, carry out multidisciplinary cooperation and laboratory archaeology, hoping to use technical means to restore the original appearance of the brick kiln.

Overall planning and protection

Next, Xiangcheng will strengthen the overall planning of the Yuanhetang Ancient Kiln Site - Lumu Ancient Town - Royal Kiln Brix Museum, actively plan the overall protection of the Yuanhetang Royal Kiln Cultural Site, and is currently studying the relevant work plan.

Strengthening the research on the firing process of gold bricks in the Ming and Qing dynasties is conducive to more in-depth disclosure of the significance of gold brick firing to the study of the Ming and Qing palaces, and enhance the influence of cultural brands.

Imperial Kiln Brics Museum

Near the site, the Suzhou Royal Kiln Golden Brick Museum is located, which is a museum with the theme of exhibiting "Royal Kiln Golden Bricks", and is also the first national AAAA scenic spot in Xiangcheng.

Here, you can witness the cultivation process of a golden brick from earth to gold, and also reproduce the journey of the golden brick into Beijing more than 600 years ago. Near the main hall of the museum, the "sister kiln" is still firing gold bricks, which is a "living cultural relic".

In 2006, the site of Lu Mu Royal Kiln was announced as a key cultural relics protection unit in Jiangsu Province, and the royal kiln gold brick making technology was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection list.
