On the morning of April 30, Professor Chen Gang of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and his son Chen Lihao successfully climbed Mount Everest at an altitude of 8848.86 meters, and father and son stood on the top of the earth hand in hand.

Born in November 1971, Chen Gang is the leader of the surveying and mapping discipline of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and a doctoral supervisor. Born in July 2001, Chen Lihao is a sophomore majoring in surveying and mapping engineering at the College of Land Science and Technology of China University of Geosciences (Beijing).

During the climb, Chen Gang and his son conducted a series of scientific expeditions and collected a large number of ice and snow samples, as well as plant and rock specimens. They carried out high-precision real-time dynamic measurement technology tests with the domestic global navigation and positioning system Beidou equipment, as well as the ice and snow cover depth detection test.

Since 2012, Professor Chen Gang has climbed Mount Everest three times to carry out scientific research work, of which in 2020, as the person in charge of measurement technology, he participated in the national task of measuring the elevation measurement of Mount Everest in China and Nepal.

Chen Gang's first three efforts were lost to the summit for various reasons. Ten years after his first ascent, he self-funded a fourth shock. On March 25 this year, he entered Tibet to start adaptive training; on April 25, he left Everest Base Camp to start his summit journey; and on April 30, he set off from the assault camp at an altitude of 8,300 meters to successfully reach the summit.

It is understood that Chen Gang was called the person who measured "height" on Mount Everest. In 2015, an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 occurred in Nepal, which affected the Everest region. Braving the aftershocks, Chen Gang's team tracked and measured the observation points within 300 kilometers of the epicenter on the north slope of Mount Everest, and successfully applied for the National Natural Science Foundation of China on the impact of the 2015 Nepal earthquake on the vertical change in the Everest region.

From the field to the classroom, Chen Gang practiced the dream of education on the three-foot podium. Rao Weibo, a 2020 graduate student of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), introduced that Chen Gang has always encouraged his students to aspire to serve the country with science and technology, and closely combine their personal future with national needs.

"Cross the Gobi Desert, fight the terrifying waves, fight the snowy plateau, and bravely climb the top of the earth." The ruler of the end of the world paints the longitude and latitude, and the sonorous footprint measures the mountains and rivers. In 2020, Chen Gang won the honorary title of "Jingchu Good Teacher".
