World Asthma Day: Under the COVID-19 pandemic, more attention should be paid to the health of asthma patients

3 May 2022 is the 24th World Asthma Day, and professionals know that the Global Asthma Initiative (GINA) chooses a theme each year, "Closing gaps and achieving homogeneous management of asthma." It aims to call for action to identify and close gaps in asthma care.

World Asthma Day: Under the COVID-19 pandemic, more attention should be paid to the health of asthma patients

Bronchial asthma is a major category of respiratory diseases, and the main symptoms are reversible wheezing and dyspnea. Such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing continuously, etc., acute attacks are often accompanied by different degrees of dyspnea. The duration of the attack varies from a few minutes to hours or even days.

World Asthma Day: Under the COVID-19 pandemic, more attention should be paid to the health of asthma patients

Symptoms are still uncontrolled in more than half of asthma patients on the mainland, and clinically the virus is one of the main factors triggering asthma exacerbations. Combined with the background of the new crown epidemic, patients with underlying diseases are at high risk of critical illness.

Causes: 1) Patients with chronic respiratory diseases have poor lung reserve function and severe symptoms after co-infection.

2) Asthma patients have low immunity, autoimmune disorders, once infected with the new crown virus, there is an inflammatory response, hypoxemia, respiratory failure, and even multifunctional organ failure.

3) During the epidemic period, the increase in home activities, the exposure of indoor triggers, the reduction of exercise and the inconvenience of medical follow-up have brought greater challenges to asthma management.

4) Asthma is susceptible to environmental (disinfectants, pollen), infection, psychological and other factors and attacks

Poor self-management of patients is an important reason for low asthma control rates.

For example: deliberate non-compliance: perceived as unnecessary treatment, concerns about side effects, inappropriate expectations, unintentional non-compliance at expense: misunderstanding of medical advice, forgetfulness, lack of daily planning of medication Causes: Difficulty in using inhalation devices, cumbersome medication methods (multiple medications per day).

The goal of asthma control is to achieve good symptom control and maintain normal activity levels; to minimize the risk of asthma attacks, irreversible impairment of lung function, and adverse drug reactions.

In particular, asthma patients and their families should be reminded of:

People with asthma should never stop prescribing inhaled corticosteroid control medications during an epidemic, and discontinuing inhaled medications such as glucocorticoids usually leads to a potential risk of exacerbation of asthma. Asthma patients can do a good job of disease prevention by avoiding contact with the source of infection, cutting off the transmission route, protecting susceptible people, and the epidemic can also be properly exercised at home, abdominal breathing, chest expansion exercise, opening and closing jumping, and so on.
