Write on the front:
Using paper, cloth surfaces, sewing machines, carpets, ceramics and tablets, artist Zhang Yonghong paints in a stream-of-consciousness way, constructing the world of the mind. At first glance, the paintings are childish and innocent, like children's graffiti. But if you think about every stroke, you will find her profound insight, beautiful expectations and tenacious commitments, as well as choices again and again when facing art and life.

Inspiration words written by Zhang Yonghong

"I have become the person I want to be; keep your heart more than everything; sew today to weave tomorrow..." Zhang Yonghong's voice was as calm as water, and she read the recent inspiration words to us.
Stream of consciousness runs through the entire process of her creation. She first wrote randomly on the paper, writing down the subtle emotions that were difficult to capture, they were the inspiration, the Yoshimitsu Kataba, writing enough, the words and sentences automatically connected, revealing the path.

"To draw what you don't know," she let emotions come rushing in and let them guide. "Painting is a choice — a myriad of choices", and the emotions of the moment are the basis for the choice. Many times the work will not be completed in one go, painting and painting and stopping, waiting for the next guidance, just like taking care of a life. When she was creating, she longed for purity, tried to forget that she was an adult, and painted only in the mood of a child, without any ties.

In the case of "The Top of the Triangle", for example, out of the need for a sense of security, she painted a huge cloud, which is so soft and nihilistic. Embracing it is nothing more than embracing oneself, and yes, in this world, security can only come from oneself. Seven drafts before and after, the picture is constantly changing. The clouds and rain came, and the birds left. She feels that she is in some futuristic world, and the picture grows with futuristic elements such as metal and glass. In the final work, broken clouds hover above the triangle, crumbling, a quiet and slightly sweet pink paralyzing nerve, and a seemingly stable atmosphere full of uncertainty.
Breathing, Watercolor on Paper, 30x20cm, 2022
In another work, Breathing, she draws with lines a woman stuck on either side of the wall who can't move, a huge ball above her head, and various figures are suspended in a mess. As if caught by an unknown force, Zhang Yonghong felt the loss of freedom, and at that moment she had a headache. These paintings are closely linked to the great dilemmas and panics that people are facing right now. For social events, people and things around her, and the emotional bondage between people, she maintains a strong sense of perception and empathy, and then derives a steady stream of inspiration words in her brain, and so on.

Emotions indicate what to draw, and how to draw next has become a new subject. Zhang Yonghong uses simple and abstract artistic language to construct a space for full interpretation through symbolic techniques. On top of this, she pulls out and examines man's relationship to herself and the world.

Her paintings often contain unexplained information, and the complexity and brilliance of human nature appear here. In the painting, she outlines square and rounded blocks. Is that a party of four? Or the embrace of two? The face was probably a cat, and the sweet aroma of mango was faintly smelling. The thick, tightly fitted body conveys a comfortable sense of trust and intimacy, which is rare in the world.
Encounter, Digital Painting, 2022
It is also in the painting that she creates human-like and bird-like figures, abandoning the self-righteous nobility of human beings and meeting the minds of animals, despite the clear boundaries under their feet. She uses this metaphor to two completely different people who can also lower their posture, listen to each other's voices, and humility will also bring people closer to the truth. Such equality and care are rare in the world. She was so obsessed with presenting things that were rare in the world, even scenes that did not exist—some kind of expectation in her heart.

She also tries to maintain a balance in the painting, light and heavy, cold and warm, sweet and bitter, safe and uneasy, affectionate and lonely... She has a lot to say, and emotions are intertwined in the picture, forming a contrast. She said that bitterness may be the background of life, but there is always some shining hope. Must have.

Zhang Yonghong in the process of creation
Thanks to that vast land, Zhang Yonghong, who grew up in Xinjiang, has a free and authentic disposition, and the artist's father and brother gave her enlightenment, and she was admitted to art school when she was in college.
After graduating, she switched between multiple creative mediums. Commonly used drawing paper and canvas is her mood log. Tablets can simulate real materials, allowing for repeated alterations, most of all free. Last year, she applied for an artist residency program in TaoXichuan, Jingdezhen, to paint on plain blanks, and she completed 120 works in one breath. Since last year, weaving blankets and tufting guns have also become her favorite. But no matter which medium is chosen, the stream-of-consciousness approach is still consistent.

Among many mediums, the creation of sewing machines is quite special. The skills learned from my mother as a teenager are still mastered, and sponges in clothes, lace from shirts, and clean stockings are all used to turn them into works. The fabric is so soft, the needle is so sharp, the moment the needle is pierced, the cracking and stinging follow, and sometimes even the fingers are punctured. The fabric that does not make any sound is finally transformed into a pure and romantic pattern.

Bitterness and sweetness overlap in her works, and also overlap in her life. Over the years, she has had moments of emotional trauma, faced the difficulties of life, felt isolated and helpless, and is confused by the generation gap with her children. "The back of the work, people can't see. Sadness can be felt by everyone, but I don't want to tell it. The world will bring good and bad to people at the same time, transcend suffering, and get closer to the light. So I am not afraid of suffering, but choose to bear it quietly, it will eventually become a creative force, but also let me become rich, tenacious, not easy to break. ”

Now Zhang Yonghong is more calm and more self-consistent, and in the moment of being trapped by the epidemic, she maintains a deep inner view and plans to concentrate and concentrate on completing some works. At present, she has a strong interest in sculpture and is looking forward to her solo exhibition at the end of the year. Asked about the person who had the greatest influence on her, she thought about it and said: "It is herself, constantly understanding and constantly denying, and eventually rising in the negation." ”

Classic quotes
o1
Painting is a choice, a myriad of choices. The very difficult part of painting lies in what to draw and how to paint, and these two problems will accompany you for a lifetime.
o2
People are sensitive animals, and very subtle emotions are precious. Some people may think it doesn't matter, but if it's important to me, I'll present it, and the creation is very subjective.
o3
I am gentle, natural, and have a very rich world inside. I always express my emotions directly, and as for what other people think, I don't care.
o4
When you paint, think of a little and paint it, and then think a little further and then paint it. Like climbing a mountain, you can only focus on your feet at the bottom of the mountain, and only after reaching the top will you know how to come all the way.
o5
In addition to passing on the goodness to people, art also creates a space for the viewer. If he sees what I'm thinking, I'm happy, and if he has other interpretations, it's better.
o6
When the artist explores the path of art, he is seeking a certain truth, that is, the brilliance of human nature.
