The "Black Box of Automobiles" (EDR) (EDR) that was required to be loaded at the beginning of this year is becoming a key basis for determining liability for traffic accidents.
Recently, a Tesla Model 3 owner in Beijing had a continuous rear-end accident on the second highway of Beijing Airport. The on-site video released by the owner of the car shows that the accident vehicle suddenly accelerated after continuously changing the line, crashed directly into a tank 300 model in front of it, and then was blocked by the front trunk cover, and then rear-ended many vehicles and stopped on the side of the highway.
According to photos from the scene of the accident, the front position of the Tesla Model 3 involved was seriously damaged, its front trunk cover had been completely detached from the vehicle, the left front wheel was missing, and the airbags that had been ejected were visible in the cracked front windshield.

The owner's statement about the accident has also aroused heated discussion among netizens. In response to the above accident, the relevant person in charge of Tesla responded to the "Daily Economic News" reporter through WeChat at 8:45 a.m. on April 28: "After verification by background data, the data shows that the driver avoids the truck in front of him and turns the steering wheel to the left, and the acceleration pedal is greatly pressed during the steering, causing the speed to rise, and the driver did not step on the brake pedal before the collision." Tesla informed the parties of the situation, but the parties expressed their approval. ”
The person in charge also added details of the accident to the reporter: "(The accident) on the afternoon of the same day, after the insurance company assessed the scene situation, informed the parties of the amount of insurance that should be paid if the vehicle was judged to be total damage. It is worth mentioning that in the face of the different opinions of the owner of the accident and the car company involved, the EDR, which was required to be forced to load the car at the beginning of this year, played a key role in determining the responsibility of the above accident.
The relevant person in charge of Tesla told reporters that because the insurance company of the vehicle involved hopes to divide the responsibility by retrieving EDR data, the parties also contacted the relevant departments of the national automobile quality supervision to express their hope to investigate the matter. Under the joint witness of relevant state departments, parties, third-party experts and Tesla quadriparties, the on-site EDR data collection of the accident vehicle was conducted on April 27. The results showed that the EDR data was consistent with the conclusion of the background data analysis.

According to public information, EDR is mainly used to record the key data of the car's operation in the three stages before, during and after the collision, such as vehicle speed, vehicle collision acceleration, steering angle of the steering wheel, engine operation status, airbag status, driver assistance system, driver's reaction action when the event occurs and other information.

"The installation of EDR will play a positive role in improving the safety of the automotive industry and help protect the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises and consumers." Ren Wanfu, an analyst in the automotive industry, said in an interview with reporters on February 14.
According to the "Notice on Matters Related to the Implementation of GB 7258-2017 Amendment No. 2" issued by the Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on April 9, 2021, "passenger cars shall be equipped with an event data recording system (EDR) in accordance with GB 39732; if equipped with an on-board video driving recording system that meets the provisions of GB/T 38892, it shall be deemed to meet the requirements". The policy will be implemented for newly produced vehicles from January 1, 2022.
"The installation of the black box will make the safety information of the vehicle more effectively guaranteed, and have a good supervisory effect on the determination of responsibility after the accident." Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the National Passenger Car Market Information Joint Association, previously told reporters that for the automotive industry, the EDR equipment will generally enhance the technical content of intelligent automotive products.
