Walking is the easiest thing in the world
——Qiu Mengyuan
Everyone needs a spiritual washing, let us gradually understand ourselves, face up to our own shortcomings and advantages, become a more gentle person, a more determined person, find the most comfortable state of life and work, manage our own life, feel the beautiful moments in life.
If you have faith, you will definitely be able to get things done. This is one of the main lines of the novel, Harold, a bland retired old man with no friends and no enemies. He lives in the English countryside with his wife, living a peaceful and estranged couple, day in and day out. One morning, he received a letter from his old friend Queenie, whom he hadn't seen in twenty years. Queenie has cancer and writes a letter to say goodbye to her life. Shocked and grieved, Harold hastily wrote a reply. When he was about to send it, he was unhappy when Queenie thought of his ordinary life. Without much thought or preparation, he walked out of the house alone, at first just trying to deliver the postbox closest to home, then the next, and the next... Following the direction in which the letter was to be transmitted, Harold did not turn around again, and went farther and farther, and finally he went all the way from the small town in the southwest corner of England to the far north-east, spanning the entire island of England. 87 days, 627 miles, with only one belief: as long as he goes, the old friend will live.
There is another equally important thread, which is what happened to Harold's life, why his walking began by accident, but was so determined. When you give up transportation and really walk on your legs, the endless land is not the only thing you can see. On the road, Harold endured blisters or cramps on his feet every day, but he also received help from many well-meaning people, and when he was wavering and choosing to give up, he had the tolerant support and spiritual companionship of his wife. Everyone he experienced, every difficulty he encountered, and every scenery he passed became a beam of light in this gray life, illuminating his dusty memory and perception space. Harold's life's experiences are constantly playing back in his mind, and his heart becomes vivid. Reliving the love at first sight with his wife, facing the pain of losing his son, reflecting on the second half of his soulless life, he re-acquainted himself and accepted himself, shook hands with himself, and realized self-salvation. Harold's mental journey, which also infects his wife, begins to accept greetings from friends, rearranges the room, and even no longer needs a psychiatrist, while searching for the good old days, forgives herself and her husband.
To understand the world, we must first understand ourselves, and this is the meaning of a person's pilgrimage.
