Cambodian mangoes are slow to sell, and farmers are forced to throw them away

author:Cambodia single network APP

According to Cambodian media, due to the slow sale of mangoes this year, a farmer was forced to throw away 30 tons of mangoes.

According to Mr. Sen Phonn, although there was a bumper harvest of mangoes this year, no one bought them. On April 23, he had to throw away 30 tons of mangoes in his orchard as garbage because the price given by the intermediary was too low, less than 100 riels per kilogram.

He added that he and other colleagues were in no mood to continue growing mangoes because the market was so bad that the harvested mangoes could only be backlogged in their hands.

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Weng Sakun said that previously, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has also repeatedly stressed that farmers must cooperate with private companies to export mangoes, because the government cannot bear the responsibility of buying mangoes.

Recently, he said, it is not only mangoes that have been difficult to sell, but other agricultural products, including fruits and vegetables, because of the crazy increase in the transportation cost of refrigerated containers. Previously, the price of a container was $2,500, but now it's risen to $7,000 to $8,000, so exporters can't afford it. In addition, it is also inconvenient to export to China through Vietnam.
