In terms of artistic achievements, China not only has the landmark tomb art of the Tang Dynasty, the unique container ceramic technique of the Song Dynasty, but also the pottery art of the Ming Dynasty. Ming Dynasty pottery also achieved landmark achievements in roof ridge decoration.

In this way, whether in the technical aspects of ceramic craftsmanship or in the art of sculpture full of religious symbolism, the roof ridge decoration has reached its peak. This is obviously the last peak before the sudden destruction, and it also makes us clearly feel the rich creativity of this nation. Because the ultimate honor of Chinese roof ridge decoration is that it is a pure folk art, and it is a kind of nameless folk art. No heroic annals record the creators of the roof ridge.

Diorama: The Roof Beast of China

Search for Chinese history lost in the West

Introduction:

The book is composed of two parts: "Roof Ridge Decoration and the Transformation of Chinese Glass" and "Ridge Beast and Other Roof Ridge Decoration" of "Chinese Architectural Ceramics", which contains more than 60,000 words and more than 120 pictures.

"Roof Ridge Decoration and the Change of Chinese Glass" was first published in 1924, which is the first monograph specializing in roof ridge decoration at home and abroad, which comprehensively and systematically introduces Chinese roof ridge decoration from multiple angles such as architecture, culture, religion and art. In addition, the book also contains more than 60 precious pictures collected by overseas private collectors, which are of great artistic and historical value. This translation is the 2019 National Social Science Foundation of China Art Project "Collection, Exhibition and Research of Chinese Art in the German-speaking World" (19BF090).

Chinese Architectural Ceramics is one of the results of Berchmann's two expeditions to Chinese architecture from 1902 to 1904 and from 1906 to 1909, first published in 1927. This book is a representative work of the Western sinology and architectural circles that systematically study Chinese architectural ceramics, especially components such as glass, and the chapter "Ridge Beasts and Other Roof Ridges" contains nearly 60 photos of roof ridges taken by the author himself.
