The full text of the speech

In today's world, humans and technology are at a turning point. During the pandemic, the world has witnessed the power of digital technologies and the ways they change our future. From 5G to the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and cloud computing, emerging digital technologies in many fields are pushing the boundaries of what is possible and, like other breakthrough technologies before them, they will have a profound impact on the future of us and the planet.

Huge possibilities come with daunting responsibilities. At present, there are still nearly three billion people around the world who are still "connected", most of whom live in developing countries, especially in rural areas. In addition, problems such as gender discrimination, the generation gap, and differences in the ability to pay for services persist. The fair use of digital technologies is not only an ethical responsibility, but also essential to global prosperity and continued development.

More than 1 billion people aged 60 or over are the focal point of this year's celebration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. This population group is expanding day by day, and it is indeed a great contribution to the social and economic achievements of our time. With the passage of time, they are now faced with new opportunities and challenges, and they deserve our care and help.

17 May is World Telecommunication and Information Society Remembrance Day (WTISD), which celebrates ITU's founding day. In response to and support the ongoing campaign of the World Health Organization and the United Nations launched the Decade of Health for Ageing, we have identified this year's theme for remembrance as "Digital Technologies for Older Persons and Healthy Ageing". I call on you to share with us what works and contribute ideas for the future of work to help older people become active participants and valuable contributors to the digital world.

In 2022, ITU will host three major conferences: the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA), the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) and the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP22). 2022 represents an unprecedented opportunity to break the vicious circle of exclusion and accelerate the digital transformation for all. Let us cherish this year, for the sake of mankind, for the sake of the whole world, let us take action! I wish all seniors a happy and healthy life that digital technology can bring.
