Fingerprint recognition | Sweden FPC is developing a non-polarized OLED fingerprint recognition sensor for off-screen fingerprint recognition

CINNO Research industry information, since last year, major panel manufacturers, such as Samsung, BOE and Huaxing Optoelectronics, have successively revealed their polarizer-free OLED technology solutions. The technology replaces the existing polarizer by adding an additional layer of color film, which can further reduce the thickness of the product while achieving brightness increase (power consumption reduction) compared to the original circular polarizer solution, which helps flexible design.

The emergence of a new ultra-thin polarizer-free OLED technology poses new challenges to the design of off-screen biometric sensors. Recently, there has been news in the market that the Swedish company FPC (FingerprintCards) is developing new biometric sensor technology and using ultra-thin displays including the above-mentioned non-polarizer OLED displays as a potential application market.

According to the report, FPC CEO Christian Fredrikson said at an investment conference organized by Erik Penser Bank, Sweden's largest private bank, that the company is developing a new biometric sensor technology. Later, a fingerprint cards representative told The Biometric Update in an email that the new technology mentioned by Fredrikson is mainly used for "Polerizer-lessOLED displays" that can simultaneously increase product brightness and reduce product thickness.

Fredrikson also spoke at the investment event about a range of measures the company has taken to alleviate current supply chain challenges, as well as the company's profitability and development prospects. Fredrikson said that the turnover of FPC fingerprint recognition modules increased by 16% last year, and the gross profit margin has improved. In addition, he said that the company's profit margins in the field of new technologies will generally be higher than those of the existing biometric sensor business for mobile devices. As this segment of the new business continues to scale, Fredrikson expects the profits of the new business to grow further, considering that the costbase will not increase in the same way.

The mobile smart device market currently accounts for 90 percent of FPC's fingerprint recognition module sales, though Fredrikson also said the company has made the majority of its R&D investments in its emerging growth areas. According to Fredrikson, FPC plans to increase its existing share of about 30% of fingerprint recognition module sales in the mobile device market to 40%, where they need to launch fingerprint recognition module products with higher security.

Looking further ahead, Fredrikson mentioned this new biometric sensor product. "The company will also launch a new under-screen fingerprint recognition technology in the wake of a new display technology, but it still looks ahead of its time," he said.

Fredrikson says the new solution is not an optical sensor, "so the market under the display will also change." He suggested that this would be part of "the third part of entering the mobile phone industry."

"FPC sees this as an opportunity to further drive biometric technology innovation, and we are currently looking for different technology solutions to use our products in polarizer-free OLED displays for fingerprint recognition," a technical representative of the company wrote in an email: "At present, product innovation in the display field is mainly concentrated in the smartphone industry, but wearable devices, tablets, infotainment systems, etc. are also possible application directions." At the same time, our company believes that capacitive fingerprint sensors will continue to occupy a significant market share in the mobile industry, and this technology will also become a viable solution for us to develop new products for polarizer-free OLED displays. ”
