After the recent three-game winning streak, the Nets' record rose to seventh place in the East, and while they still need to pass the playoffs to earn a playoff spot, it seems to the outside world that they will eventually reach the top eight in the East with two chances. With both Irving and Durant able to play, the Nets don't have to worry about the playoff offense, but on the defensive end, they need Simmons' comeback.
But according to New York Post reporter Brian Lewis, the 3rd All-Star guard is becoming less and less likely to return this season.
After a period of stalemate with the Philadelphia 76ers with mental health issues, Simmons then joined Brooklyn in a sensational deal on Feb. 10, but suffered a back injury as he prepared to play and did not play. With the L4 disc he now faces, a league source revealed that he is unlikely to make a comeback this season. Brian Lewis said.
Coincidentally, in the latest episode of the Nothing but Nets podcast, the host expressed a similar view.
"The Nets should no longer expect Simmons to play at any time in the playoffs, even if the medical team and fitness coach are optimistic that he will one day get better and return to the game through strict agreement control, but players and coaches should no longer have the luxury of thinking they can get back an all-out super guard." The moderator said.
With both Irving and Durant able to play, the Nets don't have to worry about the offensive end, but in terms of organization and defense, they need Simmons, the 3rd All-Star guard who is currently the best organizer in the Nets' lineup and has been named to the Defensive First Team of the Season twice.
In the absence of Simmons, the Nets are widely expected to win a series or two, but if Simmons can play, they will be the strongest contenders for the championship.
