Interview with ‖ Liu Junyu: Firmly moving forward on the road of art and literature

Liu Junyu's painting: "JOKER: create your own life"

Young Writers Network: Hello Junyu, thank you for coming.

Liu Junyu: Hello!

Young Writers Network: Let's talk about your writing. When did you first get introduced to writing?

Liu Junyu: Just on this issue, let me distinguish my definition of writing here. I divide writing into casual writing and conscious writing. Casual writing begins when I was in school, such as writing a diary every night, what makes me feel grateful or painful, etc., but it is very casual writing, it is a direct expression of emotion; conscious writing is when I was studying abroad, suddenly experienced some more profound things, afterwards felt that I had to write, so I suddenly realized "writing".

Young Writers Network: I remember you saying that writing and painting are "the same thing" for you?

Liu Junyu: Well, yes, I think so. Many people may feel that a person can do one thing well in a lifetime, do this today, do that tomorrow, and in the end, he must not be able to do anything well... In addition to writing and painting, I am also learning many foreign languages, learning audio acting, psychology, philosophy, and so on. It is indeed very busy and tiring to do so many things, but as long as the energy is reasonably distributed, it can still be controlled. Maybe they don't realize the integration between knowledge, so they only dare to do things that they are familiar with, but cross-border is really interesting.

Young Writers Network: I heard that you have experienced loneliness and bitterness since you made the decision to become a writer, how do you deal with the doubts and criticisms from the outside world in your life?

Liu Junyu: There is always a duel between belief and doubt, right? There are many qualities that a writer should have, and in my humble opinion, the core of which is reflected in a "moving" word. Moving, not only means to write from time to time, but also to collect and prepare materials diligently on weekdays - inspiration is always exhausted and stagnant, we can't always rely on this to write, right? Physical and mental state and emotions are also internal, uncontrollable and unstable factors, and it is difficult to ensure the quality and vitality of the work if you start writing. But even if you don't write, you shouldn't stop thinking and reflecting, even if it's sitting cross-legged, making a cup of tea, concentrating on meditation; or reading all kinds of excellent works, supplementing your own writing database... This kind of process is the core of the word "moving" as I understand it. I remember Hemingway saying, "Writers can't hang out all day, they have to have time to write." "Writing is not only conditional, but also actively chooses.

Young Writers Network: Another question, as the author of "Re-walking the Van Gogh Road", you are both writing and painting, which requires a lot of experience, experience and literacy. I heard that in order to collect enough materials and train yourself to study abroad, you also personally visited many places where Van Gogh stayed before his death to continue your artistic path. How do you think all of this has affected your painting and writing?

Liu Junyu: My understanding of art and literature has been improving, very serious, and very frank. Because I'm an extreme person, doing one thing and wanting to do it well. I personally went to some of the places van Gogh had spent before his lifetime because I knew that I had to go over to discover real, touching things that I couldn't see in books and videos, much less from the X-hand experiences of others. You see, I've experienced a lot of incredible things abroad, so when I write (create), I have a lot of ideas and hands, and I just have to express them sincerely. There is always a hint in the dark, and after three years I began to write "Retracing the Van Gogh Road". That's what it all brings me.

Young Writers Network: Not all experiences can make people grow, and some experiences can bring pain and hurt. What do you think of these experiences? Or is it stressful and difficult to quietly write "Re-walking the Van Gogh Road" during the epidemic?

Liu Junyu: It's a lot of pressure! But what can I do? Now that you have chosen, overcome it. People always have to have some hope, a little responsibility and a sense of mission. Van Gogh has been away from us for so long, and there are still many misconceptions about him in contemporary society, which is a very unfair thing for him and for us as art practitioners. There is a feeling that often haunts my heart, that is, I always have to do something for Van Gogh, and if I can restore a real Van Gogh for the reader, then it is a unique art for me. You see, van Gogh's paintings have elements of passion and wildness. Passion and wildness is a sharp sword of artistic creation, but under this sharpness there is always a kind of helplessness, that is, the person who creates art will always realize that his art is not complete, and there are more and stronger big men standing on his head, and every art creator always remembers this.

Young Writers Network: How to evaluate your study abroad career?

Liu Junyu: It is fortunate to be able to go abroad, I always hear people at home say how round the moon is abroad, now I know where the circle is, and I also recognize its incision (flaws), thinking a lot through, after all, what I see with my own eyes is completely different from what people say. I graduated in hope and despair and gained a "two-sided view" of the problem.

Young Writers Network: These arguments of yours are very special, and indeed not many people can see and understand the truth, which is why Vincent van Gogh is still misunderstood to this day. So how do you distinguish between "true" and "false" in life?

Liu Junyu: What is true? What is fake? Many times we are not sure. It's like a person suddenly saying to you, "I love you." Must that be true? But it doesn't have to be fake. Life is always vague on this level, and we all just look at the cold world outside with our own personalized keyholes and get the warmth that belongs to our audience.

Young Writers Network: Thank you Junyu, this interview is very valuable to you. I wish you a smooth writing of "Re-walking the Van Gogh Road" and a bright future for your artistic and literary path!
