The PDK system is known to make sports car manufacturer Porsche a well-deserved pioneer in technology. Compared to the system's official birth in 1981, Porsche's exploration of related transmission concepts dates back much further, with the goal of a transmission design that could combine the advantages of manual transmissions and avoid the disadvantages of automatic transmissions. As early as 1964, Porsche designers and engineers began working on a power-shift dual-clutch transmission that was mechanically controlled by cam discs. "However, in the early '70s there was no strong electronic control equipment, which was necessary to install a sensitive clutch controller on a production car." Rainer Wüst added. Rainer Wüst has been a transmission test engineer since 1971 and then head of chassis development at the Weissach R&D Center until 2009.

Then, in 1979, in response to the oil crisis of 1973, the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology organized a race for the automotive industry called "Vehicle 2000" to develop a vision of the future of the car that would optimize fuel consumption. Eventually, by modifying the prototype transmission, the team was able to develop the basic functions of the Porsche Dual Clutch Drivetrain in a Porsche 924 model and successfully demonstrated it at this stage. Subsequently, in 1981, the Porsche dual-clutch drivetrain was introduced in several versions. Looking at all the feasible transmission designs in this study, Porsche Dual-Clutch Driveline proved to be one of the most visionary technologies. While driving, the driver can shift gears by simply pressing the switch. The gears are distributed over two sub-transmissions, each with its own clutch. At any one time, only one clutch is in the bonding state, which means that the new gear can already be combined with another clutch. As with manual shifts, gears are selected by shifting the forks. However, Porsche's dual-clutch drivetrain uses a computer-controlled electro-hydraulic system. If you need to shift gears, simply turn off the clutch you are currently using and turn on the previously enabled clutch at the same time.

In the 1980s, the 962 was the first car to feature a Porsche dual-clutch drivetrain, and in 1986, Hans Joachim Stuck teamed up with Derek Bell to drive the car to its first victory in the Monza 360 km. The two then teamed up to win the 1986 World Championship. In the same year, Hans Joachim Stuck also drove the 962 and won the title at the highly competitive ADAC Würth Supercup. Porsche's dual-clutch drivetrain was also tested in rally races: at the end of 1985, rider Walter Rolle drove the Audi Sport quattro S1 equipped with the system to the Austrian rally Semperit Rally, which reached the top on its debut. The advantages of power switching are particularly prominent in rally conditions, as rally vehicles need to change gears frequently.

In the early and mid-20000s, the electronics of the vehicles developed to a certain extent, and the on-board electronics became more mature, so that the Porsche dual-clutch drivetrain was available as an option for the 911 series in 2008. The following year, the system became standard drive architecture for Panamera models: it was the first series to feature a Porsche dual-clutch drivetrain as standard for several models.
