When it comes to picture books, everyone may think that they are books for children. But if you look closely at the works of those picture book masters, you will find that each thin picture book seems to tell us about a social phenomenon.
Before, I was particularly infatuated with Anthony Brown, and his picture books were worth digging into, both in terms of illustrations and words. For example, the secret of the picture book I talked about earlier, "Sounds in the Park", many of the meanings of the pictures I have not found yet.
Therefore, I have always felt that picture books (especially those classic works of masters who have won awards) are worth reading for people of every age, and even sometimes through picture books we will find that for many practical problems, simple children understand better than we see.
A book about discussing the work of Leo Leo
Recently, a friend who is also particularly fond of picture books (who is also a very loving early childhood worker) recommended a book to me, "A Year of Reading Picture Books Together".
This book is a book written by American author Vivian Jasin Paley about her leading kindergarten children to read and explore the picture book works of picture book master Leo Leo Leo.
In every story, the children's performance is so warm to me. One of the things that touched me the most was the story about Tiko.
When the author and the children discussed Leoni's picture book "Tico and the Golden Wings", I saw the difference between adults and children in terms of how they look at the world.
Adults always solidify themselves in a "life map" that allows themselves, while children can think of things in a case-by-fact manner, and they are more receptive to the diversity of the world.
Tiko's story
Let me start with the story of Tico and the Golden Wings.
Tico was originally a wingless and flightless bird, but he had a group of friends who loved it and took care of it.
One night, a wishing bird came to him and said it could help it fulfill a wish.
So Tico said it wanted to have a pair of golden wings so that it could fly.
But after it had become strong and powerful with its golden wings and was able to soar, it found that its friends' attitude towards it had changed.
They said to Tico, "You feel better than us with these golden wings, don't you?" You want to be different from others. ”
Tico was distressed and sad, and it asked itself in its heart: Why did they go? Why get angry? Isn't it good to be different from others?
I can fly as high as an eagle, and I have the most beautiful wings in the world. But my friends left me, and I was very lonely...
Later, Tico saw many poor and difficult people, so he uprooted his golden feathers one by one and gave them to people in need to help them tide over the difficulties.
Every time it plucks a golden feather, it will grow a black feather accordingly, and finally it becomes the same as its friends, and everyone accepts it again.
Vivian, the author of "A Year with Picture Books," said in this story that she had always had doubts about Leoni's story because she couldn't accept what Tico's friends were doing, and she felt it was unfair.
Why did Tico become stronger and his friends ignore it, and when he became like everyone else, his friends were content to re-accept it?
However, when she discussed the story with the children, she found that the children in the class were all defending Tico's friends, and the children's reasons were roughly as follows:
Because Tico made them jealous
It's so selfish, with so many golden feathers
It can distribute the golden feathers to friends and then...
It can keep two of its own...
It can't seem too special, that's not good...
It wants to be different from others, in fact, it doesn't have to ask for a pair of golden wings

There is a little black girl named Renee in the class, who can be said to be a loyal fan of Leoni, who not only likes Leoni's works, but also seems to be able to see through the author's intentions behind the story.
She has a strong sense of insight, understanding and leadership. The author especially wanted to know what Renee thought of the story, so he couldn't wait to ask Renee.
Although Renee's answer did not let the author feel relieved, it also made her see the narrowness of her own view of the problem. She believes that Renee's perception of social reality surpasses her own.
Renee understands that Tico doesn't think she's so great, it's just that her friends think so, but Renee doesn't think it's unfair either.
She felt that it was because Tico understood her friends' thoughts that she pulled out her golden feathers and kept them the same as everyone else. Because the golden feather cares more about friends than friends, it is its choice.
Who are you in Leo Leoni's work?
Tiko's story can't help but remind me of the pain I felt in the process of growing up as a child, and no one can replace the mentioned Cai Hanwei, who said to the author: "What is the child most afraid of?" It's just different from others. ”
Although his mother always kept creating a different situation for him than others, he tried his best to find opportunities to integrate into his classmates.
I think he was probably in the same mood as Tiko.
Of course, this is just one of the representatives of the characters created by Leoni's picture books, just like in our real life, there are indeed some people who are more concerned about the feelings of others in their group and are willing to gain friendship by maintaining a high level of consistency with others.
In a way, I feel like I'm closer to this type of person.
In Leoni's "Afo the Vole", Afo is also a little vole who always behaves differently from his friends, but his friends are very friendly to him and understand him very well.
Knowing that Afo can also bring them pleasure in other ways, such as when there is no food in winter, he can use his poems to inspire everyone and bring spiritual comfort to everyone.
In "A Year of Reading Picture Books Together", Renee likes Leoni's Afo, she feels that she is very similar to Afo, and her friends in the kindergarten are also very kind and caring to her, and she can also bring fun to everyone.
In the story of "Crocodile Cornelius", Cornelius is a crocodile that hatches from the egg and begins to walk on two legs, so it can always see things that other crocodiles can't see.
Although every time it said what it saw, its friends always said to it impatiently, "So what?" But it never compromises on its own specialness, trying to find fun in its own world.
Someone will always approve of it, won't they?
Finally, a brief introduction to Leo Leoni
Leo Lionni (1910-1999) was an American children's literature writer and painter born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Although Leoni was 49 years old when he first started writing picture books, he ushered in a new era of picture books, and his stories were vivid and interesting and philosophical, and he was known as the "Aesop of the twentieth century".
His masterpieces "One Inch Worm", "Little Blackfish", "Aver the Vole", and "Alexander and the Clockwork Mouse" won four American Caldecott Awards in 1961, 1964, 1968 and 1970.
The first time I knew Leo Leoni was reading his little yellow and little blue book with my children. This was the first book he painted, when he was already a grandfather, which he painted for his grandson and granddaughter, and then he began his road to picture book creation.
I think he integrated his perception of life into his later picture book creation, which is really worth reading and understanding for each of us.
