The Merck Medical Congress, Merck's most representative and influential interdisciplinary industry congress, celebrated its fourth edition on March 19, 2022. Since MDT was established in some hospitals in China in 2005, the pace of comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer has been accelerating, multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment has emerged, and personalized treatment and precision medicine have flourished. Professor Cai Sanjun pointed out that MDT should run through the entire process of diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer patients, provide a forward-looking and planned comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan, reduce the incidence and death of colorectal cancer, and improve the survival status of patients.
Professor Yuan Xianglin, Director of the Cancer Center of Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, presented the practical achievements of his department team in exploring the path of cancer treatment with Chinese characteristics, including exploring a maintenance dose and combination model suitable for Chinese groups in the study of maintenance therapy for colorectal cancer, supporting the update of the relevant parts of the 2021 edition of the CSCO Bowel Cancer Guidelines; and taking the lead in the world to find that TGF-β1 gene SNP can predict radiation lung damage, which is the strongest voice in China in the field of basic research. Under the epidemic situation, the trust of life is heavier than Taishan, and Professor Yuan Xianglin's team has actively cooperated with the epidemic control in Wuhan to deeply study the impact of COVID-19 on the treatment of malignant tumors and countermeasures, and share the results globally.
Professor Li Xiaoying, Director of the Department of Endocrinology, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, analyzed the role of Chinese evidence on the development of the guideline from the "Dinghaishen Needle" for diabetes treatment. Professor Liu Jiayin, Director of the Reproductive Medicine Center of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital, introduced the current situation and latest progress of assisted reproductive technology in mainland China in a speech entitled "Reproductive Medicine and Chinese Strategy". Professor Liu Jiayin pointed out that the inclusion of assisted reproductive technology projects in medical insurance belongs to the overall plan of the national medical and health strategy and is an important development opportunity. Assisted reproductive technology in mainland China has developed rapidly in the past 20 years, and the level of basic and clinical research has entered the international advanced level. Professor Xuan Jianwei, Director of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Economics, School of Pharmacy, Sun Yat-sen University, discussed and analyzed the challenges and coping strategies of health technology assessment in mainland China from the development status of health technology assessment (HTA) in Britain, Germany, the United States and other countries, combined with the actual situation of continuous changes in the current health policy and medical insurance management system in mainland China. Professor Xuan Jianwei pointed out that the adjustment of the national medical insurance drug catalogue has gradually developed from "expert evaluation" to "quantity and quality of evidence", and HTA is an important means to evaluate innovative medical technology, optimize resource allocation, and improve the efficacy and efficiency of medical services in terms of reference drug selection and application of pharmacoeconomic models.
Professor Jin Lei, Director of the Fertility Center of Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, shared the research progress of fertility preservation and female fertility preservation technology of young female cancer patients in China around the keyword of "fertility preservation", and elaborated on the multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment mode (MDT) practice strategy and experience of female fertility preservation. Among all cancer patients in China, the proportion of women of childbearing age is 6.3%, significantly higher than in other developed countries, while more than half of young cancer patients express strong reproductive needs. The progress of research and clinical practice of female fertility preservation technology and the construction of multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment platform have promoted the orderly development of fertility preservation in mainland China.
Professor Wang Peiguo, Deputy Director of the Department of Radiotherapy, Cancer Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, started from the clinical example of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and demonstrated the important value and practical experience of multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment mode (MDT) to help improve the survival of patients with head and neck tumors. Professor Wang Peiguo believes that the perfect treatment outcome comes from the perfect treatment process, and the overall treatment plan should be formulated from the perspective of oncology. The MDT model of care significantly improves the 5-year survival rate of patients with head and neck tumors and has become the first choice for most tumor treatment models in the United States; the UK Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines stipulate that all patients with confirmed tumors must undergo MDT consultation before receiving treatment. Mainland tumor MDT develops rapidly, but most of them are single consultations and have a single purpose for discussion, and there is still room for development.
Professor Li Shunping of the School of Public Health of Shandong University shared the research progress and application of patient reported outcomes (PRO). Professor Li Shunping pointed out that in traditional clinical research, a large amount of safety and efficacy data is usually collected, but patients are rarely asked how they feel and experience during treatment. In January 2022, with the release of the "Guiding Principles for the Application of Patient Reporting Outcomes in Drug Clinical Research and Development (Trial)" issued by the drug regulatory authorities, the necessity and importance of "listening to patients' voices" were put on the agenda, but for now, the mainland has a long way to go in the development and introduction of PRO scales, the formation of localized PRO data, the promotion of PRO and clinical integration, and the establishment of an ePRO information platform.
