Bon you, do you have a habit of keeping a diary?

You might ask a rhetorical question —

The Great Diary: A History of the World Hidden in Letters, an Archive on Paper That Transcends Time and Space

But if we look at the distant timeline, we will find that what remains in the diary is not only personal memories, but also the puzzles of history that have passed.

"Memory... It's a diary that each of us carries with us. Oscar Wilde said. Many people never record their memories, or decide to start a diary at some point, but they don't end up.

Politicians and rulers often kept diaries, such as the Kangxi Emperor and Queen Victoria. But some of the most prominent diaries have witnessed extraordinary ordinary people.

On September 2, 1867, Muir set out from Louisville, Kentucky, carrying a rucksack containing necessities such as the Bible and a plant press used to preserve plant specimens. Muir was almost penniless and relied mainly on strangers to lend a helping hand. He recorded the details of the trekking in his pocket diary. These diaries later became the manuscripts of a book.

The book recommended for everyone today rarely contains the private diaries of 140 historical figures, which can be called "a condensed history of human civilization spanning 500 years"!

Thanks to the novel-like diary of an adventurer named Pigafetta, Magellan's seafaring feats are known to the world.

▲ Draw a map of the world

The manuscript of The First Circumnavigation of the Globe includes 23 exquisite hand-painted watercolor maps. This map, from one of the French manuscripts, shows the southern tip of South America and its waters between Tierra del Fuego. This stretch of water is a natural waterway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, now known as the Strait of Magellan.

Pigafetta volunteered to join the expedition, and the motivation behind it was, in his own words, a desire for experience and glory. During his 3 years at sea, he recorded in detail the flora and fauna and indigenous peoples where they went, and recounted the tragedies that befall the ships and crews. Of the 270 people who set out on the expedition, only 18 returned.

▲Anecdotes

Each of the 23 maps is closely related to a passage in the book and serves as an illustration of the narrative. The scrolls mark the name of the painted place, and sometimes also the topographic features or buildings. The scroll below, painted on Mactan Island in the Philippines, reads: "The commander of the fleet has died here." "Fleet Commander" refers to Magellan.

The "Story of Peter Rabbit", which is popular with children, was originally expanded on the basis of the author Potter's diary.

▲Picture letter

From this letter to Noel Moore, it can be seen that Potter creatively combined brief narratives and animal illustrations to form a unique style. When she first submitted her manuscript to the publisher, the drawings were simple line illustrations in a style similar to the rabbit in the letter who was fighting snowballs. However, the publisher persuaded her to redraw the drawings as painted because he thought they would be more attractive to children.

Potter once sent a friend interesting and illustrated letters on the subject of animals. There is a letter revolving around her pet rabbit Peter. The letter actually indicates the birth of Potter's famous Peter Rabbit series.

The picture letters she sent to Moore's children were also the basis for the books "The Story of Nutkin the Squirrel" and "The Tailor of Grucester."

▲Atomic bomb

Michihiko Beetani revised his diary as The Tales of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima, which was first published in the Japanese medical journal in 1950. Under the supervision of the American physician Herner Wells, in 1955, the English translation of the Hiroshima Diary was published.

The diary records the 56 days after the Hiroshima nuclear explosion and also records the work that Michihiko Beetani did as the director of the Hiroshima Communications Hospital after the explosion. Because of the severe burns, Michihiko Beeya went to the hospital to deal with his own injuries while also taking care of the influx of injured patients.

About 70% of Hiroshima's buildings were destroyed. "Hiroshima is no longer a city," Michihiko Beetani writes, "but a burn-out grassland." As far as the eye could see, he described, everything was flattened to the ground, and even the distant peaks seemed to be close at hand. He pointed out: "Hiroshima, which has no house, is really small. ”

Kafka wanted to be an artist when he was young, and also drew sketches and graffiti as illustrations for part of his diary. Many of Kafka's sketches are extremely expressive, and in his diary in early 1910 there was an illustration depicting people watching Japanese acrobatics. Each face is painted in one stroke, and the expressive curves outline the performer's body struggling to maintain balance.

These two pages of the "Thematic Table of Contents" cover the period from December 1785 to March 1786. During this time, Mozart completed the short opera Theatre Manager, two piano concertos, and composed several works for a revised edition of his opera Edomesio. He is also working on another opera, The Marriage of Figaro. In May 1786, "The Wedding of Figaro" was first performed.

▲ The soul of an officer

Sassoon's diary from June to August 1916, accompanied by this crude satire, dissects the psychology of a front-line officer, although it seems to be gossiping and boasting, but behind it is the idea of greed and fear of death. When Sassoon entered the war, he felt satisfied and even happy, and this kind of self made him deeply distressed.

As Anne Frank has verified, the essence of the diary lies in the triumph of the human spirit.

▲ Life thoughts

Camus called the book that recorded his thoughts and feelings the Cahiers. When it was published in 1962 by the Gabriel press in Paris, the title was changed to Carnets to distinguish it from Camus's collection of essays. Translator Philip Sodi, reading the manuscript, noted that Camus's rounded and full handwriting changed in each note, and that before his death, the writing became denser and more difficult to read.
