On March 26, 2022, the second lecture of "Song Xue Lecture Hall" was held in the Qiushi Conference Hall of Yuanzheng Qizhen Hotel of Zhejiang University Zijingang Campus.
The event was sponsored by the Propaganda Department of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, and hosted by the Zhejiang Ancient Books Publishing House and the Song Studies Research Center of Zhejiang University. Mr. Chen Lai, Senior Professor of Liberal Arts of Tsinghua University and Dean of the Institute of Chinese Studies, served as the keynote speaker of the second lecture, and Professor Gong Yanming, Director of the Academic Committee of the Song Studies Research Center of Zhejiang University, presided over the lecture. Mr. Chen Lai is a famous contemporary philosopher, historian of philosophy, president of the Chinese Society for the History of Philosophy, member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and librarian of the Central Museum of Culture and History. His research interests include Confucian philosophy, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Modern Confucianism.
Professor Gong Yanming said in his speech that the second lecture invited Mr. Chen Lai to give a lecture, "marking that the high-level academic exchange platform, the 'Song Xue Lecture Hall', has entered a steady operation, and the academic exchange work of 'Song Yun Culture' is being promoted through the 'Song Xue Lecture Hall', and is making great strides forward", Chen Lai's academic report "will lead us into the profound hall of Song Yun culture's 'ideological and cultural form', and glimpse the core of Song Dynasty Neo-Confucianism - the world of science, the world of Zhu Xi, and the world of the new life ideal of Song Dynasty scholars."
The lecture was titled "Introduction to Song Dynasty Science" and gave a high-level overview of Song Dynasty Science from five aspects. First of all, Professor Chen pointed out the background of the rise of Song Dynasty from four aspects: social change, cultural challenges, value reconstruction, and theoretical consciousness. Professor Chen then pointed out that the spiritual pursuit of Song Dynasty Science includes the ideal of life of "Kong Yan Le", the social ideal of "Four Sentences of Hengqu", the moral ideal of "People's Compatriots and Things", and the spiritual realm of "Benevolence and All-That-Is", which essentially embodies the new ideal of life of scholars. Focusing on the five sons of the Northern Song Dynasty (Zhou Dunyi, Ercheng, Zhang Zai, Shao Yong) and zhu (Xi) Lu (Jiuyuan) and other core figures in the history of the development of science in the Southern Song Dynasty, Professor Chen further analyzed the theoretical construction of the Northern Song Dynasty and the theoretical development of the Southern Song Dynasty, and outlined the development of the Song Dynasty. In a word, "the era of the Second Journey of the Northern Song Dynasty focused on solving the problem of 'what is reason', and the era of Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan of the Southern Song Dynasty focused on solving the problem of 'how to seek reason'" in the era." On the question of "how to reason", Song Dynasty theory was divided into three schools: "sex is reason" (Cheng Zhu), "heart is reason" (Erlu) and "matter is reason" (Yongjia school). Finally, in view of the well-known and once misunderstood proposition of "preserving heavenly reason and removing human desires", Professor Chen focused on the significance of the debate between reason and desire, and pointed out that Song Dynasty Science is ideologically "explaining people with reason" and using reason to define human nature. In the concluding remarks, Professor Chen believes that the "sub-modern Renaissance" can be used as the historical positioning of The Song Dynasty, "the Song Dynasty should not be regarded as the ideology of the decline of the late feudal society or the concept of the decline of feudal society, but away from the medieval spirit, the sub-modern Renaissance and cultural expression", "With such a positioning, we may have a plain and appropriate understanding of the science".
