Application of artificial intelligence technology in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

author:Stargazer Intelligence

Due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology and its wide application in the military field, all countries attach great importance to the enabling role of artificial intelligence in military operations, and increase strategic investment, and strive to take the lead in competition and intelligent warfare. Recently, with the continuous intensification of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, russia and Ukraine have the shadow of artificial intelligence technology behind traditional battlefields such as sea, land and air or in the game of cyberspace.

This article will use the information on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict at home and abroad gathered by "Galaxy Search" (https://xinghe.starsee.cn), an open source intelligence information platform for the military field launched by Nanjing Starlight Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., to briefly describe the artificial intelligence technologies that have been used and may be used in the Current Russian-Ukrainian Conflict.

01. Unmanned systems will play an important role in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

Recently, a surveillance footage and audio broke out on YouTube, mainly about ukrainian troops using Turkish-made TB-2 drones to attack Russian targets. This is the first time in this conflict that unmanned equipment has been exposed to participate in the operation.

Russia has always attached great importance to the application of unmanned systems in combat, and in the past military operations of the Russian military, the number of unmanned equipment participating in operations has steadily increased. In July 2018, the number of drone missions has climbed to more than 23,000 times, with a flight time of 140,000 hours, and the frequency of drones is much higher than that of manned aircraft. According to a research report recently released by the US Naval Research Center, according to the military operations carried out by the Russian military in Syria, eastern Ukraine and the Nagorno-Karabakh region in recent years, Russia's most powerful unmanned system is still a drone, and the unmanned aerial vehicle is playing a greater role in air intelligence monitoring, target acquisition and judgment, air strike coordination and artillery strikes. These drones have become a key part of the so-called "reconnaissance-firepower and reconnaissance-strike complex" of the Russian Ministry of Defense. They will play an important role in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and the Russian military is also actively exploring the actual use of unmanned vehicles, unmanned surface vehicles and unmanned underwater vehicles, so these unmanned systems are also expected to be put into use in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

02 Cyberspace: "The Key Battlefield of the Russian-Ukrainian Confrontation"

With the development of artificial intelligence technologies such as natural language processing and generative adversarial networks, cyberspace is becoming a new battlefield. Especially in social networks and social media, the confrontation of cognitive domains has become an important part of military confrontation. The Washington Post even called social media "a key battleground in the Russia-Ukraine standoff."

· Use deep learning to synthesize or tamper with images and videos for public opinion guidance

On Feb. 23, Fox News said U.S. intelligence officials were closely monitoring the video and audio that could be manipulated, including looking for deeply fake videos related to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy and other key figures.

Recently, Ukrainian propagandists have also used synthetic videos to publicize the results of the battle, and the Ukrainian KraZ military card that was destroyed in the 2014 Wudong battlefield was painted with the Russian tactical logo "Z" by artificial intelligence technology to act as the result of the Ukrainian army.

· Use social robots to automatically generate and disseminate messages for public opinion manipulation

Social bots are artificially controlled social media accounts that use pre-trained multilingual models to generate human-like speech on social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, which can be used to manipulate public opinion or incite emotions. On February 8, Ukraine's State Security Service said it had shut down a social robot farm that spread panic and issued bomb threats on social media, saying it managed 18,000 social robot accounts and that "organizers from Russia are responsible for farm supervision."

· Use artificial intelligence methods to identify falsified information

On February 4, the US CBS news network said that the US White House believed that Russia had forged a video of the explosion and "used it as an excuse to invade Ukraine."

Due to the existence of forged information for public opinion guidance and propaganda for specific purposes, accurately identifying forged information in confrontations in cyberspace is an important means to understand the intention of the enemy's actions. Usually, methods such as checkerboard shadows and co-occurrence matrices detect false videos generated by adversarial networks, and false information such as text can also be detected by means such as knowledge graphs. In the cognitive domain confrontation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the two countries will most likely use such technologies to detect forged information to ensure their dominant position in the confrontation process.

03. Using Artificial Intelligence to Obtain Open Source Intelligence: An Important Supplement to Conventional Intelligence Surveillance Methods

Due to the gradual deepening of the Russian-Ukrainian confrontation in Ukraine, a large number of Ukrainian netizens published multimodal information about the Ukrainian army and Russian troops on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. Both sides have the potential to use natural language processing, computer vision, knowledge graphs and other technologies to unearth military intelligence about equipment models, combat deployments, battle damage and other military intelligence in this social media information.

04. Use artificial intelligence technology to conduct review research

For the Russian and Ukrainian armies, post-war review is an important part of improving combat effectiveness, the traditional way of review often concentrates on one or several military operations, in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the Russian army is likely to use artificial intelligence technology to extract fixed rules from a large number of military operations, to provide a basis for the next operation, in order to achieve better operational results.

For military fans, galaxy search can automatically gather information related to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in chronological order to form an event context, and military fans can draw a battlefield form map according to the event context, which is convenient for others to quickly and intuitively understand the process of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
