On March 18, the "2021 New Discoveries of Chinese Archaeology" was announced, and the archaeological "Twin Stars" from Sichuan, the Sanxingdui Shang Dynasty Ruins in Guanghan City, and the Paleolithic Ruins in Piluo, Daocheng County, were both selected!

"New Discoveries in Chinese Archaeology in 2021" is sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and an important criterion for the selection is the academic value of archaeological projects.

Among the two major projects awarded in Sichuan, the archaeological excavation of the Shang Dynasty site in Sanxingdui in Guanghan City is one of the implementation contents of the Major Project of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage "Archaeology in China" "Research on the Process of Bashu Civilization in Sichuan-Chongqing Region". Since the launch of a new round of excavations in March 2020, the distribution range and internal pattern of the sacrifice area have been preliminarily clarified, and 6 new "sacrifice pits" have been discovered, and the excavation of the 6 sacrifice pits has basically been completed. The excavation was jointly carried out by the Sichuan Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, represented by the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the School of Archaeology of Peking University, 39 domestic scientific research institutions, universities and science and technology companies, adhering to the work concept of "topic presetting, protection synchronization, multidisciplinary integration, and multi-team cooperation", and carrying out archaeological excavation, cultural relics protection and multidisciplinary research. Up to now, 6 newly discovered "sacrifice pits" have unearthed tens of thousands of numbered cultural relics, and more than 2400 pieces of nearly complete instruments, including more than 870 bronzes, 510 gold objects, more than 450 jades, more than 120 stone tools, 13 pieces of pottery, and more than 400 pieces of complete ivory, important cultural relics include gold masks, bird-shaped gold leaf ornaments, bronze-topped kneeling figures, bronze head portraits, copper heads, copper masks, copper statues, copper statues, copper "altars", copper dragons, copper mesh-like turtle back shaped vessels, jade zhang, Jade Ge, jade chisel, sacred tree pattern jade Qun, jade seat, jade knife, stone ge, pottery dwarf collar urn, pottery tip bottom cup, silk fabric residue, ivory carving, sea shell, etc., some cultural relics from the shape, ornamentation, are not seen before.

Another project of this award, the Paleolithic Ruins of Pirao in Daocheng County, has been hailed as a new archaeological discovery of major academic and socio-political significance in the world, which will have an important academic impact at home and abroad.

In September 2021, the project was released by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage under the name of "Archaeology china" major project.
