On February 26, South Korea won the Nongshim Shin Ramen Cup, known as the "China-Japan-Korea Three Nations Team Tournament.". South Korea's shin Jin-hyun defeated the four most elite players from China and Japan in turn, completing a dramatic comeback. On the 2nd, the reporter met with the new savior of Korean Go, Shin Jin-jin Jiudan, at the Korean Chess Academy in Hongik-dong, Seoul.

Q: You're taller than I thought

Shin: About 1 meter 80, weight is 65-69 kg, but in February he participated in many large international competitions and lost 3-4 kg. (Lee Sedol jiudan said that he would not eat anything before the match) But I had to eat. In the morning, my mother made me convenience food, nothing particularly liked, and I loved fried chicken since I was a child, and I didn't drink much.

(Shin often eats bananas during the competition, and this scene was filmed several times during the live broadcast, and chess fans called it "the winning banana.") And he replied sadly: "Eat for survival." When I was too tired to eat, I also felt very sad)

Q: What is your usual schedule?

Shin Jin-chan: Usually get up late, usually around 10 a.m., home is only 10 minutes away from the Korean chess academy, before the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, every day in the chess academy. I haven't been out of the house very often lately. Sit in front of the computer all day studying Go. Sleep around 1am. In addition to eating, not watching TV, there is no such thing as Netflix. I don't have time to travel...

(At present, Shin Isjeong is the strongest chess player in the world.) Although unofficial, it has been firmly ranked first on "Go Ratings" since January 2019) South Korean Go, once suppressed by China, has regained its vitality after Shin Jin-hyun appeared. Since 2022, Shen Zhenchen's record is 18 wins and 3 losses, with a winning percentage of 85.71% (as of March 3), and all three losses have been lost to domestic chess players, and since June 8 last year, Shen Zhenchen has never been defeated by a foreign chess player. There were 28 consecutive wins, 23 of which were against Chinese players. (Editor's note: This record does not include the 1:2 loss to Wang Xinghao in the TWT Tencent Go Championship) So it earned a lot of prize money, with prize money exceeding 1 billion won (about 5.19 million yuan) in 2020 and 2021 consecutively. The money is managed by his parents, and for Shin, a credit card is enough, and there is nothing to spend. )

Shin Jin-hyun was born in Busan on March 17, 2000. My parents opened a Go school in Busan. Hating kindergarten life, he grew up playing chess pieces at chess school. Shin Jin-shu began playing Go at the age of four. He was already a prodigy before he went to elementary school. In the fourth grade of elementary school, he won four national children's Go championships. In order to grow up, the family living in Busan moved to Seoul in February 2012. In July of that year, Shin Jin-chan entered the section through the Elite Go Tournament. He was born in 2000 as the first professional chess player.

Q: The schedule of the day in elementary school has become a topic. Every night I played net chess and said, "If you lose, you play until you win," right?

Shin: I don't want to lose. Many times, I lose more than ten games to sleep. But lately it has been gone, first of all, I don't play net chess as often as I used to. Secondly, I have rarely lost recently.

(Shin is a horrible winner.) In the first set of the LG Cup final with China's Yang Dingxin Jiudan in February, he reversed the loss that had dropped to 1.5%. Shin said: "I don't want to lose now." "Go must be decided, and when failure accumulates, it will not become dull, but it will increase the sense of helplessness." )

Q: Are you a genius or an effort?

Shin: I seem to have a talent, that's for sure. Even if there are players who work harder than me, there will be no chess players who work harder than I do. When I lived in Busan, if I wanted to compete, I had to come to Seoul. It's really hard. If there is no fun, it will not be done (Shin Jin-jin has determined the path of life since he was a child. Eventually, I dropped out of school in the first year of junior high school. He said: "I think the diploma is meaningless and I won't regret it")

Q: Is Go fun now, too?

Shin: It's funny. If it hadn't been fun, I wouldn't have gotten to this point. Of course, it is different from the attitude towards Go as a child. Now I feel responsible. It is not so much a sense of responsibility as a professional chess player. When I introduce Go, I always say that Go is fun. Of course, this may not be as interesting as the League of Legends games. But Go is also fun. The reason why Go has been passed down for a long time is precisely because It is very interesting.

Q: What did you learn from your predecessors?

Shin Jin-chan: I learned a sense of immovability from Lee Chang-ho Jiu Duan, and Lee Se-seok Jiu Duan learned charm. The most affected is Park Ting-hwan Jiudan. I learned a lot, I learned how to treat Go. He has always been sincere about Go (among Korean players, Shin Jin-hyun is a chess player without a teacher. Although he was born in the Okiwa Dojo, he entered the section after 5 months)

(With Park Young-hwan's all-time record of 28 wins and 22 losses, Shin Jin-hyun leads.) Before the end of 2019, Shin Washu was beaten with a record of 2 wins and 10 losses. In 2020, Shin Shin-chan reversed it with a record of 14 wins and 2 losses. It was thought that Park Young-hwan's era was coming to an end and Shin Jin-hyun's era was coming, but in December 2021, in the Samsung Cup final, Park Ting-hwan defeated Shin Jin-hyun 2:1 to win the championship. After the game, the loser came to the winner's position to rematch, which made a deep impression. In the first inning, Park Visits Shin Jin-hyun, and in the second and third innings, Shin Jin-hyun visits Park Young-hwan. When talking about this, Shin Replied without hesitation, "This is a beautiful scene." Although it is a World Series final, we always ask each other for advice." Shin Jin-hyun and Park Young-hwan were friends before they became rivals)

Target Ke Jie

Shen Zhenchen's biggest opponent is Ke Jie Jiudan, not only because China ranks first, but also because the record is 7 wins and 11 losses Ke Jie leads. Shin's record in the Professional World Series is also inferior to that of Ke Jie (3:8). When he became a professional chess player 10 years ago, Shin's goal was to win the World Series. When asked about his current goals, Shin said: "I want to win more titles than Ke Jie at the World Series".

Q: On February 25, the confrontation with Nongshim Xin Ramen Cup Ke Jie became a hot topic. This is the strongest showdown between China and South Korea, but from the perspective of the review, the match ended prematurely from the beginning of the preamble.

Shen Zhenchen: I studied Ke Jie's layout, and according to the preliminary plan, it was easy to win (this is an amazing answer. Because Ke Jie is black. The prologue is carried out on the black side. How much research is needed to predict and respond to all of Kejie's layouts? The round was up to 36 hands, and Shin Shin-jin took only 33 seconds).

Q: After the game, Ke Jie's remarks caused controversy.

Shen Zhenchen: Ke Jie is wrong. He said I went to the bathroom a lot, but that wasn't true. Ke Jie's AI coincidence with me is also correct. My match in that game was 65.8%. But Ke Jie said it was 71%. This varies greatly. A 65% coincidence means a number of "if I play 5 innings, I'll make another", and more than 70% are "it takes 100 innings to make one or two innings". Ke Jie said that my fit was too high, which made me misunderstand, just like saying that I cheated. The phrase "it seems to be more powerful than an alpha dog" is unpleasant in a similar context. Ke Jie's coincidence on that day was only 49%. I played well that day, but Ke Jie didn't. I'm better than Ke Jie, so there's nothing wrong with coming to that conclusion.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to say to Ke Jie?

Shin: I recognize his strength. But as the first person in China, I hope to show a sincere attitude towards things other than Go. After Ke Jie spoke, Chinese chess fans sent about 500 text messages. Of those, 95% were messages that supported me, and only about 5% were accusations and verbal abuse. This means that Chinese chess fans also know that Ke Jie's statement is wrong.

Q: How about a duel with Ke Jie? Lee Sedol also played juban chess with Gu Li.

Shin: There is no reason to refuse. If I can arrange a juban chess game with Ke Jie this year, I will definitely do it. If you don't want others to gossip, you have to face the situation. I believe that this will also be a good thing for the promotion of Go.

Q: How is the face-to-face tournament that disappeared because of covid-19 different from online Go?

Shin: Face-to-face matches are beneficial. Because the atmosphere is different. Online Go does not have this environment (Shin often goes to the Wild Fox Go network to play chess. As long as he plays a game, chess fans will flock to him. His Wild Fox Net's English name is "nparadigm" and his Korean name is "Countdown").

Taste of artificial intelligence

Q: How to learn Go with artificial intelligence?

Shen Zhenchen: I don't often play against artificial intelligence. Instead, continue to increase the number of points recommended by the AI. It's important to understand why AI recommends this.

Q: There are comments that after the advent of artificial intelligence, Go became bleak. Humans play Go with a style preference, and artificial intelligence's Go has only the right answer.

Shin: I have different ideas. Artificial intelligence also has a chess style. For example, ai has a 50% win rate. There are 49.9% points next to it, and there are 50.1% points next to it. No matter where you put it, the winning percentage is no different. However, the direction of the chess game is completely different. I understand that this difference is a difference in chess style.

Q: Artificial intelligence is also constantly advancing. What if you play a game with artificial intelligence?

Shin Jin-chan: Lee Sedol played the "Alpha Go Lee" version in nine dans, achieving a 1-4 result. Ke Jie cried three times in the Alpha Go Master Edition, which evolved more than the Lee Sedol version. If I'm racing with a new version, I may need to be made 3 blocks. So my official match against Alpha Go doesn't make sense. To play Go well, we must recognize the gap between the strength of humans and artificial intelligence.

(The official competitions at the Hangzhou Asian Games in September include Go.) The men's and women's team competitions and the men's individual competitions are three events. Shin Has actually decided to fight. 6 male chess players played, ranking 1st and 2nd places were automatically played. He said that if he won the gold medal, he would enjoy the preferential treatment of exemption from military service, he said seriously. "More important than military service benefits is the promotion of Go through the Asian Games." This is the sense of responsibility that can be felt, and this is the sense of responsibility to promote Go as a professional chess player's mission. )
